What brand of salt do you use? Has anyone had problems with oceanic?

Really? I had a massive problem with it in Oregon. My PH levels were always below 8.0 My LFS had they same problem and they eventually cancelled all transactions with Oceanic and switched salt companys and it fixed there problem. It seems like all the LFS out here sell Oceanic.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong. I've only been using it for a couple years.
IO is popular out here too.

Spend the time and search this site. About every 6-8 months this question comes up. It has been discussed many many times. I only use IO reef crystals. If I run out then I use regular IO or red sea from Mountain Shadow. I do everything i can not to run out. I'm glad Mike has good luck with Oceanic. I personally had bad luck with it and had to mix it 50/50 with IO.

I use Oceanic, and I have used it for quite awhile and never any problems as long as I checked the alk and added superbuffer to adjust . Lately the alk has been ok and I know Shawn @ Aquatica and Brad @ The Aquarium use it in their displays.

You know this makes me think......I have had to buffer my alk lately and was wondering why......I do a 10 gal water change every other week and wondered why my ph and alk were low......I guess I will switch back to IO......I thought it was because I have added so many corals in the last six months.....

Oh and Mike if you are out there.....I know you are.....
I did what you suggested when we talked at Matt's house....when I bought the percs from you......
I stopped doing the water changes every week and the nitrates corrected themselves....Thanks for the advice..

Jerry, that's great. Thanks for updating me on that.
As far as Oceanic Salt goes I do a 10-15% water change every week and I still dose Alk & CA every day.

It doesn't matter which salt I use. My tank's pH is always around 7.8 - 7.9 which, contrary to popular opinion, is not bad. Bad is when it ranges from 7.9 to 8.4 due to adding buffers trying to keep it at 8.2...
I used to use IO. I now use Ocean Pure. I have used Kent, Oceanic, and I even tried that Marine Environment Salt which IMO is a total waste of money...
Thanks,
Scott

FOR WHAT EVER ITS WORTH HERE IS MY OPINION ON SALTS. IVE TESTED AND USED NEARLY ALL THE REPUTABLE AND SOME NOT SO REPUTABLE SALTS.
MIXED FRESH USING R.O. WATER AT A S.G. OF 1.023, AND A TEMP 76 F. I WILL RATE THEM, AVERAGE - BETTER - BEST. THIS BY NO MEANS IS SCIENTIFIC IN NATURE BUT IT EXPLAINS WHY I SELL THE BRANDS THAT I DO.
OCEANIC-BEST REEF CRYSTALS- BEST TROPIC MARIN - BEST SEACHEM - BEST (NEW REEF FORMULA) I.O.- BETTER KENT- BETTER M.E.- #$@! CORALIFE - AVERAGE RED SEA - AVERAGE OCEAN PURE - BETTER
THE TESTS THAT IVE DONE ARE CALCIUM, ALK, STRONTIUM, MAGNESIUM, IODIDE, PHOSPHATE, NITRATE, NITRITE, SILICATE. IF YOU ARE USING I.O. OR KENT TEST YOUR CALCIUM AND MAGNESIUM BECAUSE THEY WERE TYPICALLY VERY LOW, ALTHOUGH IO WAS HIGHER IN MAGNESIUM. I CURRENTLY SELL IO, OCEANIC, REEF CRYSTALS AND OCEAN PURE. THERE ARE PROS AND CONS TO ALL SALTS, IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FEEL FREE TO ASK NEXT TIME YOUR IN MY STORE!
HOPE THIS HELPS

You haven't found Oceanic to be terribly low on alk? Maybe they changed there formula. It used to be you had to buffer it right out of the bucket.

EVERY TIME IVE TESTED IT OUT OF THE BUCKET ITS BEEN SPOT ON N.S.L. ONE OF THE FEW THAT ACTUALLY HAVE. WHAT LEVEL ARE YOU TRYING TO ACHIEVE?

My bucket of Oceanic mixed up:
SG: 1.026
Ca: 450 ppm
Alk: 2.5 meg/l
Mg: 1400+ ppm
That is spot on for NSW alkalinity and a little high on Ca and Mg. But most people here target a slightly higher alkalinity in their tanks (~3 meg/l).
My only issue with Oceanic is when it first appeared, the manufacturer didn't even know boron was in seawater (and didn't know how much was in their salt) and they didn't think strontium was of any importance either. So, what else are they ignorant of? But I'm sure it's a fine salt, lots of people use it without too many issues.

I mix io and oceanic 50/50. Works much better than oceanic alone (tried that when I filled the new tank and it took weeks for the ca to drop). Also tried io by itself with my nano but ca was too low. Mixture of both seems to work well.

JON WHO DID YOU TALK TO @ OCEANIC, IF THEY CLAIMED THAT YOU TALKED TO THE WRONG PERSON. BEFORE IT WAS EVEN RELEASED TO THE MARKET THE BALANCE OF TRACE ELEMENTS INVOLVED IS WHY I BEGAN USING IT. AT THE TIME IT WAS ONE OF THE FEW SALTS THAT ACHIEVED NSW LEVELS. AND THEY ADVERTISED IT AS SUCH. INCLUDING BORON, STRONTIUM AND OBVIOUSLY A COUPLE OF MORONS TOO. NOT YOU JON!

I no longer have the correspondence, but I guess it could have been some lackey behind a desk answering technical questions. The simple fact that so many people use it successfully, means it must be ok.
PS... I've got a small tank I want to fill with pretty softies (mushrooms, mostly), looks like this will give me an excuse to start stopping by your store again!
