This brings up a question I've had for a while. Where do you draw the line between palys and zoas?

I have no idea how to tell just by looking.
I've had a ton of zoos that morphed into what looks like a paly.
Here is what one of them looked like when I bought it. They were small and close to the rock.
Here is what it looks like now. They are big polyps and stick out about 3/4"-1" off the rock

Palys use sand and sediment to strengthen their tissue they will also eat. Zoas do not use sand or sediment and seldom will take food.

Oh, yeah. Zoas are generally smaller, 1/2" or smaller though there are exceptions.

Sorry for the late reply. Sukie brought this thread to my attention.
What we usually call Palythoas are usually Protopalythoas (like the "Blundell Button"). The difference is that Protopalythoa polyps are not combined into a large sea-mat like palythoas are, although these two genera are currently being re-described and will most likely end up together into one genus (and depending on who you talk to already are). I also might mention that the entire order Zoanthidea is not described well at all so there may be no good/clear answer.
I also would like to point out that anything in the order Zoanthidea is consider a Zoanthid. Palythoa falls under this order and under the family Zoanthidea so basically they are Zoanthids, but to answer the question I am going to assume:
zoas = genus Zoanthus
palys = genus Palythoa and/or Protopalythoa
Others have already mentioned some of these.
- Palythoas are larger, Zoanthus usually has a polyp < .5"
- Palythoas bind debris/sediment in their tissue. They can also produce some calcium structures within their tissue (although this is very limited).
- Zoanthus usually reproduce by budding from the base, while Palythoas reproduce by budding from the stolon.
- I also belive there are some internal disctictions between the two genera, but I am not sure what these are.
- Palythoas are usually never bright orange, blue, pink, etc. They are usually brown, green, white, yellow, and purple and usually fairly dull (this is just my personal observation).
Not sure if that helps, but there you go.
