Topic: Decrease in value?? Posted: June 10 2004 at 7:05am |
I have a vault in between my kitchen and my living room and it only has a 1/2 wall. On the kitchen side I have a counter top with cabinets and above cabinets. So, I measured and lucky me my 120 would fit snug as a bug in a rug.. It would be very easy to use the exsiting cabinets and then add a small wall for the kitchen side to hide the MH and walla.. A tank built into the wall in my living room... My question is this.. What will this do to the value of my house, should I decide to sell. I know us fish geeks would think it was great but what about those who dont do fish.. Does anyone know if this decreases the value?? |

It doesn't decrease the $ value. However, I was told by a realtor that it could decrease interest in your property to someone who didn't want a tank in their wall. So if two identical houses are for sale side by side, and yours had a fish tank in it, someone might buy the one next door just because they wouldn't know what to do with a fish tank if they had one. So I guess if you're planning on staying awhile... Go for it. If not...

It really wouldn't be that difficult to give the perspective buyers the option of removing it and you adding drywall to the space as part of the contract agreement. Your agent would be responsible for making sure that the buyers agent is aware of this so that it is NOT a determining factor. Really, any addition to a home could work both ways. What if someone wants a deck instead of a patio or what if they prefer sliding glass instead of French doors? I am building a full bar in my basement. In Utah. But when I sell, they can use it or take it out. Until then, I will be enjoying it! Heck, I might even put in a stripper pole for the heck of it! (Of course it will be called a "fireman's pole" during daylight hours, for the kids' sake)
It's your house, so make it your own. Walls can be rebuilt, carpet can be changed, etc. I would go for it!

Connie,
Just so you know Carl's pole is actually the Festivus Pole we used a few meetings back. I think it was Finch's originally, but when Carl wants something...... you just move out of the way and let him have it.
Oh yah, and I say add the tank. You can always take it down later.

My cousin built a 180 into a wall in their home just over a year ago and it looks fantastic. The best part is that you can see it from both sides. More room for Coral. Yea!!!

Ill clarify... Carl posted in between William's and mine.. William was just at my house and my tank will explode if I put one more coral in it....So, my husband will hunt William down for suggesting more coral and Carl down for a beer and to see that pole... |

I built my tank into the wall between my office and downstairs family room. I love how it looks and my wife loves that she can look through the tank and see if I'm there. I hadn't thought if it might devalue the home though because I've told my wife this is our final home. No more moving. Then again a house with a pole..... hmmmmmm.

Lastly, I'd be remiss if I did not remind you that as nice as Carl may look all greased up in his Stilettos, Baby oil and brass poles can be a deadly combination. Please practice the Fireman's slide responsibly. The hobby is ridiculed enough without high adrenline rookies filling the press with stories of pole mishaps.
P.S. Good luck with the in-wall tank. Can't wait to see pics.

Jamison, that's pretty funny! Quite creative. Remind me to give you a complimentary lap dance.
And for the pole.... believe it or not... check it out: http://www.stripperpole.com And don't worry, it's a rated PG site.
