Topic: Workhorse 7 and VHOs? Posted: February 01 2005 at 4:26pm |
The Workhorse 7 is supposed to be rated for T12VHO's. How many 46" 110vho's can it run? If the answer is "one" then how do you wire it. I would like to have two but it doesn't appear to be very safe. Please help!!

The WH-7 can run up to 96" of VHO in series. The way I, who has done it a lot, do it is to connect three red wires to the two pins of the first tube then connect all pins of both first and second tubes together and then connect the yellow wire to the 2 pins on the remaining end of the second tube. The fourth red wire is clipped off and insulated to prevent injury.
I have a fold out sheet of all the possible PC/VHO tubes and combinations of WH ballasts and wiring schematics or you can go to www.fulham.com for schematics.
Fire Shrimp at Marine Aquatics sells ARO ballasts which may simply be Fulham ballasts in a shorter fatter package.
Oh and it is completely safe if wired properly with properly insulated connections. Butt-end connectors, end caps and properly grounded ballast (and reflectors) are safest.
Do you have a reflector or need to get reflector material?

Thanks, Mark. I've looked on Fulhams site and I cannot find any wiring diagram for a Workhorse 7.

Look again. It's the big gray box in the center of the window that says "...and wiring diagram". Consider your two VHO 46.5" T-12's as though they were one 96" T-12.
Feel free to call and I can walk you through it.

I think that the ARO Balasts that you can get from Marine Aquatics are great. I've been using them for 6 months and I've been very happy with them. Plus the wiring diagram is right on the balast.

I've misplaced my chart, but I'm pretty sure a WH-5 is what is needed for that application. That is what the box is for on the fulham website, to determine the application/which one to use for which tubes.

A WH5 will not properly power any VHO bulb. If you want to use a Workhorse ballast, then you need a WH7. The ARO-220 would work too. A few months back at one of our meetings we measured the amp draw for these two ballasts and found the ARO-220 drew less then VHO needed amps and the lamps were visibly dimmer then the WH7 lamps. But we may have had a bad ARO ballast...

I just found my chart. Thanks to Jon for chiming in with the correction and thanks to Eric for setting us straight on the ARO ballasts being equally as effective as Workhorse ballasts.
