I have had this leather for about 8 + months. In the last 3 months he has shriveled up and turned light purple a total of 2 times. The first time it lasted for about 2 weeks and then he looked normal. (About 6 inches tall and 3 ½ across and a light salmon color) and this latest time it has been about 5 days now.

Any ideas what he is doing??

I'm going to guess and it's going to be a completely guess in the dark. . .

It's growing and that's normal.

(am I wrong folks?)

This is normal.

If you watch carefully, the coral will likely excrete a mucus that covers nearly the whole coral. The mucus will slough off, removing detritus, algae or whatever may be on the surface of the coral.

In fact, my hermit crabs love to eat the mucus when this happen in my tank.

Mine does the same thing. Pretty regularly. I never have had any polyp extension though. I can see little nubs like they want to come out, but they never do. The leather looks great other than that. It gets nice and big when the lights come on most days.

Any ideas on helping with the polyp extension?

Stephan,
I would try moving it first and giving it more light. Most leathers I see that are fully extended have lots of light on them. That would be my guess. I'm not totally sure though.
