Just wondering if there is a better snail that I could get besides the astraea.  I dont like the idea that they cannot right them selves.  dustin

How about cerith or nassarius. Both excellent choices IMO.

I do like astreas too though!

Nassarius stay in the sandbed and are great snails but to substitute  for Astreas I use Nerite and Cerith. Nerite tend to spend most of their time on the glass and Cerith work on the rocks, sand, and  glass much  like Astreas. These are the 3 best types of snails readily available IMHO.

so for a 75 gallon what would you all suggest?  How many of each?

Tough call. There is a very wide opinion of how many is enough. I would go with a dozen Nerite, a dozen Cerith, and if you have a deep sand bed I would work up to a dozen Nassarius. If the tank is new I would wait a couple month for the Nassarius then start with 4 and add 2-4 every month or  two until you have about a dozen.

I think this also depends on your feeding habits and the fish you have. If you are a heavy feeder you will probably want to beef up the clean up crew. Also if you have messy eaters (like tangs) then you want more crabs/snails also IMO

Mike, Do you mean this when you speak of the Nerite snail?:

Often called a Margarita Snail, it's scientific name is Nerita funicula.
