Topic: Out of Town - Feeding Posted: October 16 2007 at 8:51pm |
Does anyone have good ideas or recommendations on feeding fish while their owners are on vacation? I know that the feeding blocks or cubes are available, but I fear that a lot of that food just pollutes the water and filters, but I hope I am wrong. I need a quick way to take care of this, since my fish - sitter just backed out on me - the day before I leave. Any tips would be great. Thank you.

There are a few automated feeders you can get. Most LFS will have them. I have used this one without problems http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/group/10847/product.web

The one i use, its a little more expensive then the other one posted, but It allows you to program up to 4 feedings per day, either single or duble feedings for each time

If it's only a few days to a week with a well established tank then I wouldn't worry about feeding.

I agree with Mike. If your tank is well established your fish can go for a week with out any issues. Where are you? There are members everywhere that would help.

Also, If you do decide to use someone who is not experienced with fish to feed while you are gone, make up packets of food to be feed each day in Ziplock bags or something. This way some non-fish person doesn't overfeed and kill you tank. It has happened many times.
I also happen to agree with Mike. if you are gone 7 days or less don't worry about feeding them.

Just wanted to say thanks for the input that I received here. I was out of town for 5 days, and when I got home, the fish were fine, although they wouldnt stop looking at me until I fed them. I am glad that I asked the question - since then, I have only been feeding about every 3-4 days, and the fish seem fine, full of energy. I had been feeding a good amount once a day, and always have had a nitrate problem (between 25 and 75 PPM). So, I am hoping that this is the solution to that problem, especially since I feel I ahve adequate filtration.
One more question, if I may - I should know the answer to this, considering I have had my tank set up for 6 years now, but will my nitrates decreas with time alone with the new feeding schedules, or do nitrates only decrease with water changes?

Water change will help but the nitrates will slowly go down if the problem is fixed.

Yeah, I usually only feed once a week anyway.
