DIY Balasts and Connectors-Where to buy them?

A friend of mine is interested in starting a reef.  I don't know all the details but he will be converting a freshwater tank with a canopy.  Where does one buy lighting for this?  I'm looking for DIY lighting that will need to fit and mount in various places in a wood canopy.  I want to give him different options so small/large PC ballasts and plugs, T5 to MH options are all welcome.  The only requirement is that individual lights can be manually mounted in various places in a canopy.
