Topic: 180Gal SPS (new*picsOCT29) Posted: May 22 2008 at 9:39pm |
Well, I swear this is the last tank that I will setup....until I buy my own home. haha First I will do a few farewell pics of my 30 gal bowfront and some of the growth I have had from Crystal's SPS she gave me. I want to say its been about two months of growth.
Here is old picture and newer and newest.
recent..er
even more recenter..er
today
dfs
Here is some growth from Some SPS. (also the BTA split.)
Taken first week in April (i think 1st of may)
This is it today. (also you can see in the two seperate tank shots of the same growth)
picture of my Clam-mydia
And here is the New tank. 180 gallon 60" x 24 x 30 high. Rimless and glass euro-braces. 2x 250 older aqualight with new 14k bulbs from no name company. I don't run the actinics because its negligible on light change. Thinking of doing 3x250's or even doing 2x 400 watt 14k ushio because I will eventually get a tank with that is 36 deep and 36 wide, and don't want to purchase new equipment every few years. Tank came with all the goodies. It has a closed loop in the bottom that is ran by a iwaki30xlt, and iwaki40xlrt for overflow. Has two seaswirls that I haven't hooked up yet (just haven't plugged them in) Tall stand no canopy as of yet.
Here is it lit up
Front view of rockwork.
Top angle view of rockwork and euro-brace
LEFT SIDE
Right Side
Well, it came with all the rock and six fish......no a single piece of aiptasia, not a single majano. Rock was all large pieces and looked great. Six fish, the two tangsin the main tank and a pyshcedelic mandarin (in my small tank devouring all the pods). a clownfish(got stuck in pump overnight and killed the other fish that shared his rubbermaid bin with no oxgen and waterflow) and a hawkfish that decided to jump ship in his rubber maid bin. Poor guys. may they rest in peace. The tangs and mandarin are doing really well. I will keep you posted. It has been setup completely for a week now. Starting to get a little algae on rocks and sand. My tests only show ammonia , but with no nitrate or nitrites yet. Did a 20 gallon water change today though, and siphoned sand. When i cleaned the filter socks there were about 50 little brittle serpent stars. (so if anyone wants any free, im sure I will see more) Keep yall posted. and thanks for putting up with my shenanigans.

Havent really posted anything on the forums in awhile, so going to put some more pictures up to see what i have been up to....I think I need Mike to come over and take some photos. My camera changes the colors of everything, and I can never seem to get really close up shots without blurriness or color distortion......So mike if your ever in Provo with a camera slung over your back let me know. Until then these will have to do.

Very nice. Lee-Mar tank? I love the black silicone and ground edges. Not to side-track the thread, but I can't understand why All-Glass doesn't grind their glass edges- Perfecto does...

Yeah, not sure who made it although its good work. Ground edges and whatnot. Yeah, easy to grind the edges and makes it much nicer.

A little less than two months ago.
Today. (notice the tableing red acro right in the middle how much bigger it got. It has grown two+ inches in less than two months) That and my teal stag and my milli'es grow about the same. Everything else slow and steady.
This certain variety of blastos ive been trying to get ahold of forever now. Heads are the size of quarters.
This pink mille next to my pink lemonade who is finally coloring back to green with pink polyps. That pink mille and lemonade are my favorites. Although i got a new Rainbow Nasuta today that is unbelievable. (sorry pics of the Nasuta are bad, so its not worth posting.)

Looking sweet!
What do feel is your "secret" on the SPS growth?
My own small SPS frags have all colored up very nicely and display great extension... but to my eye have not actually grown all that much...

I don't know about secret. I think im just lucky. I have a really light fish load.
Powderblue tang
2 anthias
percula
2 chromis
mandarin.
I run SeaGel (activated carbon and phosguard) through a media reactor. Run a Euro-reef skimmer rated for roughly 180 gallon. UV sterilizer.
Salinity 1.026
ALK min 8 (i let it go down to 8 with salifert tests, then over three/four days i raise it to 9.5ish)
Calcium min 400 (after alk is raised up i wait a day then dose with Reef Complete till calcium is up to 450ish)
Then wait a day and dose Magnesium if needed. then start cycle over
TEMP 78-79 (one week ago i added another 250 DE 20k to my 400w ushio 14k's so temps are now at 79-81)
Try and do a 15-20 gallonwater change with reefcrystals every 5-7 days. Besides that I have a fair amount of flow with a closed loop on an iwaki 30md and return with an iwaki 40xlrt on seaswirls, and 2 MJ 1200 modded for more flow.
I don't grow any macroalgae for nutrient export.
Sand Bed 3+ inches.
Tank Problems: Besides all the great SPS color and growth I have gotten on my tank there are three out of about 40 pieces of SPS that don't do well in my tank. One is a garf bonsai. I have two different frags of this species and one has grown and kept color and the other has encrusted yet never gotten its purple color back on the stalks. Some other coral that I got from Jared awhile back slowly lost its color but still has grown. A random bali maricultured that is finally getting color after being brown for four months. (my friend has this piece as well and his is doing the same browning except for the tips). Also my green slimer has never gotten that deep green color that its known for, but it grows like a weed in my tank. Besides that doing good.
I don't know, i really think just constant maintenance and slow and steady parameters are my success. That and luck.

One more thing. I changed out the Carbon last week, and just in one week things have colored up even more. I hadn't changed it in about 2 months. I will definetly keep changing it every 2-4 weeks now.

Looks like we are pretty close as far as water paramaters, temps, etc
Mine -
Alk = 10 to 10.5 dKH
Ca = 400 - 420 ppm
Mg = 1340 ppm
Temp = 77.8 - 80.0
SG = 1.0255 very stable
And I run carbon and pO4 remover and change the carbon monthly. I Skim fairly agressively, too. I do 18g WCs every 2 weeks, so similar to you but not as frequent. And my fish bioload is similar to yours.
Differences : Small - I grow macro, you don't... Bigger - I have less flow on my return and no CL, so probably only 60% of the gph total flow you have... Biggest - I'm guessing the biggest difference is that you are running 400w MHs while I am running 250w MHs

That is an awesome setup. I really like the pink mille, infact I think any mille are my favorite. I have a rose mille in my thirty gallon under t5's and it is showing growth. I have a few sps that are doing pretty good under t5's and a couple that are just alive but not showing any growth, I also have a clam that has been in there for about 3 weeks and it is already showing growth.
I believe that water changes and fish bio-load are a determining factor in the way things grow and flourish. I do not have a skimmer, I have a built in fuge with macro and three mangroves, my tank runs between 80 and 82 degrees with 1.025 salinity. I do not test for anything and use a two part nano reef dosage every 3 or 4 days. I have only four fish, two shrimp a brittle star and hermits and snails.
Any way, that is my two cents, and again, that is an awesome setup.
P.S
You can see my thirty gallon under '30 Gal. updated W/picts.'

Thanks for the compliments, guys. And yes I drain my bank account every time i top off my water in my tank. Hey Jerry, about those corals. I don't remember where we were at. I remember i got two things of salt from you, and only gave you part of the cash, but also I gave you that ozonizer. So whatever to make it even would work out. I just haven't been up that way in awhile, but now that gas is dropping I should make a visit. Ive always loved your tanks.
