I have two corals that are dying!  I have tried everything that I know to do with no luck.

The corals are a green brain (I believe it is a Trachyphyllia radiata), and a plate coral (believed to be Heliofungia actiniformis).

I have dipped them and seperated then from the pack, they are under great lighting. (29 g tank with an Aqua MEdic 150 HQI 10K, supplemented with a Custom SeaLife 65 Watt Actinitic)

The Salinity measures at 1.022 (Constant)

Alkalilinity is about 7 dkh

Iodine fine

Ammonia, nitrite 0

Nitrate < 20

Temp 78

I use Custom sea life salt and switch between Water from Aquaitica and bottled water from IcyPeaks.

All other Corals and fish appear to be alright.

A side note is that the brain and the plate at one time where next to each other in the tank, the plate got sick after swelling and and coming in contact with the brain.  The brain was sick first.

If tissue continues to recede, then I would consider fragging it.  Otherwise until then, put it in an area of higher water flow.

I think the corals are too far gone.  Unfortuanatly once these coarls start to die off there is little you can do to save them.

Fragging is an option, but will most likely kill both specimens.

Well in that case, I definately say frag 'em.  If they are going to die anyway, you have nothing to lose.

Just cut right through the tissue and skeleton.  Don't worry about getting the "mouth" just get a nice big piece of whatever tissue still looks good.

By the way, just to make sure I got this right...  how blue is your halide?  Do you only have one 65 watt cf blue bulb?  That isn't much blue if you ask me.

The hqio is the aquamedic 10k (which is actually a 13K)  I do only have one additional light on it right now, I'm thinking of adding another 65 watt pc

I also have an xm 20k bulb for the hqi, but I don't like the way that it looks, not brite enough.  I like the whiter (and also brighter) light of the aquamedic bulb.  I added the actinic because there wasn't enough blue.  It looks alot better now.  I have another balast that a friend is borrowing, when I get it back I'll see what it looks like.

I'll let you know how the fragging goes.

Well I split the corals, The palte split into 4 pieces, 1/4 each, I'll try to save 2 of them.

The Brain, I moved in on the live tissue and cut it.

I'll keep all posted.

Try using some Tetracycline on the new cut area to help with infection i have saved many corals by using it.

As Eric mentioned Tetracycline can help.

I also increase my dosing of iodine.

So sorry to hear that.  What a shame.  Is there anything we can learn from what you saw?  Was there any early indication that they weren't happy?  I don't have either of those kinds of coral, but I think they're neat & worth learning about.  I'm trying to learn the difference between an "unhappy phase" and an "UH OH!" phase.  Ya know?

I thin kthat the biggest thing that I learned, is that when Coral is having trouble, don't place it near something healthy.

My brain was having trouble, and started to recede, I moved it away from the clams, and other corals in the tank, and placed it a little to close to the plate, I thought I was alright, but Iforgot how much the plate expanded, the plate expanded and touch the brain, and got sick from it.  Once the deseas spread, there was nothing that I could do.

I tried an iodine dip, but then again, I think that I was to late with it to do any good.  I may have been able to try the tetracycline trick earlier on as well, but again, too little to late.  I think once things got out od control I did a good job containing tings, in that nothing else is sick right now.

My advise:

1.  Know your corals, not only what they are and eat, but how they behave.

2.  Don't be afraid to try radical ideas.  If I had done an iodine dip sooner, or given the coral a tetracycline dip I may have saved it.

3.  Know when to cut loses, I had one sick coral and could have stopped things there, but I messed around and got another one sick.  Both died.

4.  No one wants a sick coral :)
