I may be getting a 150 gallon tank.  What do people recommend for lighting?  I was probably going to go with MH with some T5's.  These would be in a canopy so I guess I would need a retrofit kit.  What's the best bang for the buck?

I would go 250 watt. 3 of them and a T5 Glo system for supplemental lighting

What are your spec's of the tank?  How long, wide, and tall?

Is it the normal 150? 48x24x30?

If it is then go with 2 250W MH and 4 T5s to supplement if it will fit. Go with either IceCap or Reefgeek reflectors on the T5. Don't bother with anything else. If you can't fit 4 but really want 4 then switch to the Aquactinics reflectors. They are only 2" wide compared to 2.5" for the IceCap and reefgeek.

As for bulbs I like the Phoenix 14K's for the MH. Then on the T5 do this:

Front of tank
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Aquablue
MH    MH
UVL Aquasun
ATI Blue Plus

The colors would be amaizng on that setup! You could replace the Aquablue with a GE 6500K if you would like. Then it wouldn't be as blue a look.

As Ryan recommended, if it is the 4'x2' foot print, the 2 -250's and 4 - t5's with Icecap reflectors.  They will fit because that is exactly what I have on my 120g with the same foot print.  The only difference is the 150 is 6" taller.  If you are putting them in a hood, the opening over the water is roughly 21.5" wide and 21.5" deep ( 18"  inches if you dont count the space taken by the overflows) The t5 retros take up a total of 11" in depth of space leaving anywhere from 7-10" of space to mount the MH's.  My MH's pendants are 11"x6" so I have plenty of room.

It's actually a 6 ft wide tank.  Should I do 3 250's MH with supplemental T5?

yes, 3 250's then.  (shameless plug - I happen to have 2 large PFO reflectors and 2 ARO 250 w ballasts I am selling)

*edit or you could do 2 x250's and 1x400 in the center.

Alright with it being 6 ft you need 3 MH. Or you could do 2 and leave the ends a little darker. That looks really cool too. PLus the T5s can get the ends so you could keep some LPS and softies on the edges.

Since it is 72" you will need 8 T5. 4 in front and 4 in back. You could start out with just 2 in front and 2 in back and add the others later. That is what is so great about retro. You can add what you want when you want.

I would go with 3-250 watt MH and 6' VHO or 5' T5HO supplements. You could also go with all 5' T5HO. I would not go with 3' T5HO just because of cost.
