I was wondering who has or has had a clam in the past, and if they can answer some of my questions. What type is a good one to have that will actually live. I have 175 w mh in my tank and my sps and lps do great. I was think about getting one but was wondering what people would recommend to get when getting a clam. Also what types do well on sand and do well on rock? Thanks for the input!

I have a crocea and a derasa.  The derasa seems to like it better in the sand.  The crocea seems to prefer something to attach it's foot to, but let go of his rock a while back and I haven't found a good spot on a rock for him so he has been in the sand.  He is just as happy as when he was on his rock.  He moved over by my frogspawn for a while and attached his foot to the skeleton, I don't think he liked being that close as he let go and moved an inch or two away from the frogspawn soon afterward.
Both are kept under 250W MH about 3' from the lights (~2' for the tank and the lights about ~12" above the tank).
Other key points... They prefer a good amount of flow as they filter feed and need the calcium levels maintained.

Hmmm . . . I've had great luck with Croceas but that is under 250 watt MH.

i would vote for a crocea. for the simple reason that they like rock mounting better. since you are using a little less light, this would allow you to put it higher in the tank and give it more light. they are very brightly colored. they also dont grow as large as other species. good luck. they are great additions to the reef. you will be very happy.

We have a crocea that we love. We had it in the sand for awhile, then perched it on a rock. It likes the rock better. We too have 175w MH. It is super colorful and extends its mantle very well. I have heard at this size (nearly full grown) it hardly filter feeds at all and is dependent upon the light. We have a calc reactor, before we got it we could not get our calc levels even close to what we wanted. I am sure the clam contributed to that.
