35 views and not one reply! Anyone have a 400 watt bulb right now? I have heard from someone who has seen the new bulb in action that the 20,000K DE makes the 10,000K SE's look dim. They will be expensive however. Over $100 just for the bulb.

XM and Randium are manufacturers. They both produce se and de bulbs.
For most tanks 24" or less it seems the 250w DE do a fine job. 400w DE would be good for deep tanks.

So who is running 400 watt SEs? If anyone is interested in a 400watt bulb and mogul base, i'll be selling mine as soon as I get the DE bulb.

I think that if you had a SE and a DE compared on the same ballast(HQI) they would be about the same.

*Talk about brining a thread back from the dead OP was in Aug '04
I had 2 - 400w SE on
my 120g tank, way to much light in my opinion. I was melting
everything. So I upgraded to 2 - 250w

I like DE bulbs because of their shape, which lends itself to doing better in reflectors. I think that most hobbyists can't really appreciate a 400w DE bulb since we don't run really deep tanks. It seems that most tanks are no deeper than 30" in the mainstream hobbyist world, and IMHO 400w DE bulbs are more suited to tanks that are 30" and deeper. It would seem to me to be a waste of money to get a bulb system that is almost TOO MUCH LIGHT for standard tanks. Where's Adam? I'm sure he's going to say that you can't have too much light...

Eric/cory, How do you think the intensity compares with SE 400watt? Hows the spread? Is the ballast about 450watts?
