I need to put some snails in my refugium to help with the algae but I'm worried because my return pump doesn't have anything over the pipe. I don't want to get them sucked up into my pump. Is there an effective way to block snails without blocking flow?

My return pipe is a 1" PVC.

They make strainers for most pumps and also to fit pvc pipe.

I normally just make strainers.  Put some pvc pipe on the intake to your pump, drill it full of holes and cap the end.

Make it as large and long as you can, and you don't have to worry about it restricting the flow even if it was partially plugged up.
