So after another discussion with the president of MASNA (Marine Aquarium Societies of North America) she asked this question "what would MASNA have to do to get your members more interested in MASNA, and supporting our organization?  What would you like to see MASNA do?".  I said I'd post it here and wait for replies...

All expand that question with this.
Why didn't any of you go to Boston last weekend to attend the big MACNA conference?
AND more importantly
What would have to happen to make you go to D.C. next year to attend the big MACNA conference?

I really want to see a MACNA! But, I can't talk Rob into going to the east coast for a reef conference. I had talked him into gong to next years conference, just 'cause I was thinking it was in Washington State!

I really wish we could do one in Vegas! Or San Diego! Or Boise!

Suzy- Holly Cow!  That is a little spooky.  That is exactly what I told her.
Jon- too expensive?  For the traveling or for the conference itself?  Better as a one day conference, better as a 3 day.... please elaborate.

If it was held in Vegas or San Diego or Seattle I would go IF I knew about it a few months in advance, and if it sounded like they would have interesting speakers and/or product representatives.  I know that the AquaSpace light people (company named Aqua Medic) were in Boston.  I would especially like it if it were held in Seattle, or what the heck... Salt Lake City.

I guess I'm somewhat of a selfish person when it comes to them asking how I could be more interested in MASNA.  Initially, I think "Well, what do they do for us?"  What can they do for our club?  If they charge dues to be a member of MASNA, then why couldn't they give us $500 to help with a SLC conference?

Too expensive for the average hobbyist.  $500 for airfair, $300-450 for hotel, $175 for the conference, $300 for food/entertainment...  I go to conferences for work a couple times a year.  They're more expensive then MACNA, I learn alot that helps me in my job, but in the end it's my employer that foots the bill.  Some of those conferences I might be willing to pay on my own because it helps me in my job.  But, I just don't have that kind of money to spend on a conference dedicated to a hobby.

And... If I'm patient and willing to wait, many of those speakers might just visit our club and give their presentation.  It might take three years, but that's only $75 in club fees.  And as much fun as it would be to be there to hear their presentations, most of the info presented will eventually (within the year) be published somewhere where I can get at it.

just my opinion...

Jon- all makes sense, and I agree.  I guess that is why I don't go as well.  I also think it is why MACNA should move around the county, because you'd get more total number of hobbyists to at least attend one.  And I think that would be a great experience for many people. (for instance I didn't want to go to Louisville, DC, Baltimore, Boston)

I would go if I could afford it.

Being a poor college student this could really only happen if I could drive.

I misunderstood your question! You said MASLA, not MACNA, right?

I would be more inclined to be involved with MASLA, if they were
more into research as it pertains to hobbyists, not scientists.
Whenever I find a paper with some info I need, it is always involving
something I can't do on a hobbyist level.

Is she wanting us to be more involved in the organization, ie, give
$$$$ or volunteer or what?

Here is what I think  this would be an amazing experience.  I myself am a poor college student, and couldnt afford airfair and all the super fancy things.

But,  I say what ever happened to those old fashioned road trips of yesteryear.  I move thats exactly what we should do.

hell,  I will even drive.  I have room for 5 people total in my car.  whos with me..

Suzy- good questions.  Not sure how they want us to be involved, but I'm thinking they are wondering "why didn't you pay membership this year".  I think they want our money, so they want to know what services they need to offer to get it.

Sushi- count me in.  Plus I don't require one of those 5 seats..... I'm happy strapped to the hood.

I'm up for a road trip (ask Adam), but D.C. is a little far for a road trip IMO.

Dude Jake is great for Road Trippin'.  Pile in the Pathfinder and head to Boise, Vegas, San Diego, San Jose, Seattle, Denver... any of those places and you can count us in.

But we need to convince them to have a conference out here first.

Sounds like a bunch of old old men,  road trip is too long,  make them come here.  sounds like you all need a wahburger and some french cries.

So lets load up your walkers, make sure you have your fiber, and hit the open road.
im sure Jewnyer could hang,  cant the rest of the crew?

I would be up for a roadtrip somewhere in the west half of the U.S.  I would also attend if the conference was somewhere closer.  I'm in the same boat as the others in that I can't justify that much of an expense for a hobby.

How about we all schedule our family vacations around the conference and head up to DC?  I think I'll tell the wife we're going to DC then say, "WOW!  Look at that honey, there's a reef conference going on here!  What a coincidence!"

Man DC would be nice.  The wheels on my walker fell off though sushi.  I'd also like to order a whineaken with my wahmburger and my french cries.  I got my own car, I'll follow behind.  The trip wouldn't seem that long if Adam told another story about "Carl", cause I'd just kill myself.  Just kidding all mighty El Presidente.  All kidding aside, I would love a road trip.

I don't have many more stories about Karl (remember with a K).  But I do have some stories about a fish named Rob.  But the girl fish call Rob-A because he is a hottie and always brings his A game.  Oh, and a fish named Finch. But those stories will have to wait until road trip time.

By the way, you all know that road trip group from Boise is coming this weekend to see our Reef Tour right?  I think they're also coming to laugh at you people down south because they know Boise St is going win big this Friday night.
