Topic: Lighting Suggestions Posted: January 02 2010 at 10:34pm |
Okay so I've been out of the hobby for awhile (about a year) and I'm starting to get back into it, I have a 10gal dimensions are (L)23.25" x (W)8.75" x (H)10.75". I need some lighting suggestions. For those of you who may remember me I had a 65 gal with 250/150 MH. However I haven't really decided what I want to do with this set-up. I'm debating between 70 or 150 MH or just some T5HO's. I really like the MH set up cause I really dig the shimmering effects, Ive had PC before but after research I've come to the conclusion that I want T5HO's over PC, but MH over all of them. Can you put a 150 HQI bulb in a 250 HQI set up? This set-up http://www.marineandreef.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=RES08600&CartID=1

I want T5 over all of them personally, especially a T5/LED combo. I am not sure on the budget but two PAR38 LED bulbs would be perfect for that tank.

On a tank that small a 2 tube T5HO and moonlight LED's will give you plenty of light and shimmer to boot. I have an aquatic life T5HO with Moonlight LED's. I leave the LED's on with the T5HO's and get nice shimmer and great light over a 55 Gal Frag Tank. I have a 2 tube standard output T5 fixture over my 10G Clown tank and I grow soft corals and Zoos. If you bump that up to HO tubes you should be able to grow just about anything you want.

Yeah thats kinda what I was thinking. I ended up buying a T5HO from hellolights.com( http://www.hellolights.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1827), It doesnt have any moonlights or LED's for that matter, any suggestions for some LED's? I think 3 ttl is what I want. Thanks for the advice.

Azoo makes a cool little light that might work with the one you ordered from Hellolights.
Check out this link. http://www.marinedepot.com/Azoo_Neo_Light_LED_Flexible_Mount_LED_Light_Fixtures-Azoo-AZ72178-FILTFILDFX-vi.html
If that doesn't work out the Taam Rio Mini Sun is another option.
Good Luck.

Regarding the question about MH, the ballast and bulb must match, so, No a 150 cannot be placed in a 250 fixture.

Jeremy, you're in japan you have the sickest lighting available,
Get one of those sweet halide spotlights that are the rage over there.
There are people working like crazy to get them available here.
As far as wattages of halides you can run a 150 hqi, 175 SE, and a 250 DE/SE all on a 175/150 hqi electronic ballast, it is over/under driven accordingly, but a 150 hqi bulb will not fit into the 250 brackets.
I've got some stuff i can ship you if you want to mess with it as well.

Getting enough bulbs over the tank to bring out every color is the biggest problem. So now we need a minimum 2' depth tank and multiple fixtures run front to back instead of side to side so you can get enough white for growth, Blue for the blue green colors, Reds for pink through orange, purple to bring out the violets plus room for spot lights @#$%?^*.
I'll stick with my 2 10,000k and 2 actinics for now. The colors look good enough to me and most everyone who comes to look at my tank.
