I was wondering how can you tell PC bulb life? I just purchase a fixture for my FW 30G its 55W 50/50 and it looks brigther than my 130W PC of 29G my reef

Typically you figure after a year the bulb has lost 50% or more of it's photosynthetically useful radiation.   Some say you should even change them every 6 months.

The only way to tell for sure is to measure PAR with a PAR meter and when it falls below the amount you require then replace them.  Usually you would measure when the bulb is new and then again every so often until the PAR is reduced to around 50%.  Even 50% may be less light than you need depending on your tank and what other lighting you may have.
