Topic: Blue Tang Posted: August 21 2010 at 3:35pm |
|
My blue tang has been doing so well up until the last week. I have noticed that it isn't out swimming in the tank like it usually does. It doesn't come out to eat either. It stays in the bottom corner between the glass and rock and won't come out. Not sure what is going on. If it sees you looking at it, it looks like its trying to swim out of the corner but not going anywhere. I know it's not stuck because it has plenty of room down there. Anyone have any idea of what is going on? Haven't seen ich on it either.

Blue tangs are usually afraid of it's own shadow. Just send some food into his hiding area when you get a chance. It'll come out.

And a few other questions are: How long has this Blue Tang been in this tank? What other fish are there, especially recently added? Can you post a full tank pic?

The tank is 28 gallons. I know at some point I have to move the fish to a bigger tank. My salt level stays between 1.023 and 1.026. Temp 78-80. Feeding is Emerald Cuisine. No white dots.

It's been in my tank around 6 months. The most recent fish added was an eyelash blenny which around a month ago. This is pretty recent. (I am at work so no access to the newest pics)

So I got home from work tonight and my blue tang was out. IT was swimming around just like normal. I feed on Sundays and Wednesdays so I fed the tank. My husband and I watched as my blue tang did loopty loops just like letting go of a balloon with air in it. It was all over the tank in a matter of seconds and now its back to hiding. And now that it was out, there are a couple of white dots. I already started the garlic treatment. Any other ideas?

Wow, you have a lot of fish for such a small tank without adding the blue tang.
Use Garlic and try not to stress it out.
If it makes it, I would consider finding it a home asap or buying a larger setup. With that many fish in such a small tank I'm not surprised that the tang is distressed.

Mark- I don't know what your garlic feeding plan is. We were going to put her into my husbands bigger tank soon. She has outgrown my tank.

That's not too many fish, IMO, but we can't see the Blue Tang. What size is it? It could reach 5 inches before I would worry about moving it.
Please look in the link below for the way to use Garlic Oil. It's in the Tips and How To's section titled "Secret of adding new fish and the Miracle of Garlic Oil".
What's that patch of algae?

My blue tang is around 2 to 2 1/2 inches long. It's been out more the last 2 days but still is doing some jerky neurotic behavior. The green stuff is the dreaded green hair algae. I have been combating that for awhile and I thought it was all gone so I gave my sea hare to my father in law but now it's coming back. I have been told that doing RO water changes is good to get rid of the green hair algae. I know that the blue tang was eating the algae because of her poops. I will look into the garlic treatment. My blue tang has had some ich before and I have been able to get rid of it.

Two other hobbyists have recently posted about their Hair Algae problem. Please read these threads so I don't have to repeat. http://www.utahreefs.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=42989You should know that Sea Hares are typically unreliable but great when they eat the stuff. There is a better way to control nuisance algae. The key is knowledge.

Speaking of Blue tangs and tank size. What is the recommended tank size for tangs? I currently have a 120gal Fat(not 120 long) and wondering if this is enough room for a tang? Is is all about the tank volume or the swimming length that is the concern?

Depends on who you ask. A 120 is plenty for most tangs unless it's an extremely large tang

But 120 fat? or 120 long? I currently have the fat which makes it slightly taller and much wider but the length is currently that of a 55gall (4ft)
