I like what Ben said.
Below I have listed all the things I can think of that have worked for people in the past. They are in no particular order. If you call me or even better, invite me for an in person evaluation, I can help you determine which of these changes is best for your aquarium.
An increase in herbivores
- more snails and hermits
- more herbivorous fish
- more herbivorous inverts
An increase in algae
- increase/change the Macroalgae growing in the Refugium
- increase/change the macroalgae growing in the display
- add more varieties of Macroalgae
A decrease in nutrients from all sources
- stop feeding
- stop water changes
- check topoff water for elevated TDS and N
A change in tank lighting,
- sometimes more light or more actinic light
- sometimes less light or less white light
A change in flow
- more flow everywhere
- more in a different direction, especially up
- more aimed at the algae
- change the reefscaping to shake the detritus off rocks and to change flow around the rock
A change in the sand bed
- stirring the sand bed
- removing loose rock from off the sand to create more flow over the sand
- opening up the sand by elevating large rocks with small rocks
- vacuuming to remove detritis
- adding a few cups/gallons of critterful LS from a healthy reef aquarium
- adding Oolitic sand underneath, even just a few quarts/gallons
A change in the Sump/Refugium
- using whiter or brighter lighting
- increasing the photoperiod, even 24/7
- adding to or replacing the sand (best place for a very DSB which eats lots of Nitrates)
- sending more water through to eat more nutrients
