If it's acrylic and has euro bracing I'd recommend leaving the top on, without bracing along the top the tank will bow and eventually rupture a seam from the stress.

You could use a table or circular saw with a high blade count. Then to really clean it up and make it look nice run a router around it taking off another 1/16". You can also run a torch across it quickly after you router it to "polish the edge".
