Topic: ? Sun Polyps? Posted: March 24 2005 at 11:41pm |
I was looking at my tank tonight and noticed what looks like a couple of new starts of my sun polyps. Can they spread on to other rocks thru the water? If you look closely on each side of my colony you can see them.

What you are seeing is possibly sunpolyps from your colony(ever notice gammets released???). Could be just hitchhikers as well that are beginning to grow well. Are you positive they are tubastrea stony coral(skeletal)?

My guess (if you are talking about the red things in the background) is that you have something that you don't want that will spread throughout your tank and you wished that you had gotten rid of it the momment you noticed it.

If you would have posted pics of just the isolated polyps, I would have said they look like sun polyps. But since they are right next to a colony of sun polyps, there is almost no doubt in my mind what they are

I zoomed in on the individual polyp and it certainly looks like tubastrea, but how would it get to the other rocks?

After reading more into Borneman's coral book, I've decided that they are not only possibly, but probably tubastrea... it seems that this is a common way of propegation for them if cared for properly. So... congrats on a job well done!!!

Brad, care to share your sun polyp secrets? What do you feed? What are your water parameters? etc...

I feed them cyclopeez almost every morning. I dont hand feed them ,I just disperse the cyclopeez into my return stream and they are located in a natural funnel area where they are able to catch the food. It's fun to watch them all close up when the food reaches them. Then they come out bigger than ever.
I fed them last night and I couldnt believe how big they got , almost an inch in extension. So of cours I took another picture to share it with all of you.
This is after lights out so the picture isnt that good with the flash. You are welcome to stop by and see them in person.

Oh those look great!! From the first picture it looked as though the unknowns were farther in the background, but with this new picture I can see that they are very close to the rocks, and yeah I'm sure that they jumped off of the main colony. Thats a coral I have always wanted to keep but never tried because of their Need For Feed.

Gee, and I was just thinking what a great pic that was. In the first shot I could see some people thinking they might be pest anemones, but in the last pic it is obvious that they are Tubastrea. Great job raising a very pretty colony. Gotta love those Sun Polyps.

They look gorgeous! Do you think some black ones would look cool next to them? Do you think they would irritate each other? I might know a place that has some black......

Those are awsome looking. When they are partially out they look like
those pencil trolls that you spin the pencil and the hair gets all crazy What is the minimum light possible to keep these?

You can have these under any light . These corals do not live off of the light, you must feed them on a regular basis. I feed mine brine shrimp and cyclopeeze.
