Topic: Butterflyfish in Reef Tanks Posted: June 05 2013 at 9:23am |
I wanted to get some feedback from you guys on your experience with butterflyfish. I'm specifically thinking of a Copperband or perhaps a Yellow Longnose. In your experience, have they been reef safe? Are they good community fish?
Thanks!

Why are they considered "with caution" regarding reefs? I've heard that sometimes they don't eat very well-- what's the secret to fixing that?

They're just finicky. If it were me I'd be sure they're eating before you take it home. We have some at Reefon that eat great for us. We're happy to feed them in front of customers as well so they can be sure it's eating. Anyways wherever you decide to get the fish from, be sure to ask to see them eat BEFORE you take it. That's something a lot of people forget to do for finicky eaters.

They sometimes eat coral, but generally are great fish. I'd happily but either one, or both.

Additional question: do these guys bother shrimp, crabs or snails?
