Well guys, my tank has been up and running for about two months now, and it looks like we've got ourselves an algae outbreak. My camera isn't great, but this orange/brown film hit the rocks and sand-- literally overnight.

First, I'm wondering what it is.

Second, what has worked best to treat this in your experience. Thanks guys!

It is diatoms. They are ugly but its normal. They usually take care of themselves and cycle out of the tank in a few weeks. You can add some more snails and crabs to help with it though in the meantime.

Looks fine.  Good sign.  Just give it about two weeks.  It will all turn green everywhere, then clear up a week after that.

Mollies will also eat it and a large clump of Macroalgae will help shorten it's duration.
