Topic: daughters mini-mini reef Posted: November 05 2013 at 7:56am |
My 9 yr old asked if I would share her tank with everyone. She is very excited to have her own tank to put together and hear everyone's thought on it. She is working with an aqueon 4 gl,sand, and one piece of live rock which we picked up from a member last night. The tank already had some palys, mushrooms and sps in it. We have changed the light out to a skkye 8 watt led clamp and added a sponge to the back over flow. Today I will be gather some live rock rubble from my sump in our 120 so she can build her self a structure.I will be offering her little assistance in helping her build a successful reef. she has big plans to grow chalice, brain coral, and some softies (all her favorite coral) and house 1 fire fish. Here's her progress so far.

Very Cool. Ya might want to rethink the Firefish in an open top tank. Notorious jumpers.

I know haha our purple lost his mind and committed suicide in our 120. The tank actually has a top on both the back and front which snap on

Is it a solid top? I believe the reason Firefish are notorious jumpers is because hobbyists unknowingly do not provide the right environment for them. I have had excellent experience with Firefish loving the tank so much that they don't jump. This allows me to keep the top of the tank completely open for excellent gas exchange. Ironically, poor gas exchange in the tank is just one of many reasons why fish jump. Briefly listed, here are some of the other reasons I have discovered: No mates/friends; Secluded tank location; Incorrect water conditions; Not enough hiding places; No grove of Macroalgae. Let me know if you would like me to expand/explain more on those items. Aloha, Mark

No, I can post a picture of it if you would like. We've only had a problem with that one for fish in the 120 but still have 3 very happy fire fish in there(that tank does not have a top)

this is going to be a great little setup! I think you'll be happy with that light. This is the same light that comes with the Nuvo 8 and its a good light.

It came work my Nuvo 16 but I decided to use an led strip on that tank so I've never used this light. What have you been able to grow with it? She wants to put a lot of lps in there but I'm not sure if that light will grow it or it might be too much that tank is little I may be over lighting it. It's only about 8 in deep

she built her scape just the way she likes. In a couple days we will start adding coral and possibly a fish. As of today she has 1 crab, 2 snails, mushrooms and some sps.

In my 8 gal I have an rbta, zoas, mushrooms, gsp, and I just added some blastos, acans, and war coral. So far everything seems happy.
