Topic: Nano LEDs? Posted: March 06 2015 at 11:11am |
I probably should have just gone to the meeting this past week... oh well...
I have 6 gal JBJ nano cube, and I'm sick of the stock PC bulb that came with it. I'd love to put LEDs over it and actually grow something beyond Kenya tree... I've searched online and have found a billion different clip on LED fixtures for nanos, but honestly have no clue how to gauge what will work for growing softies and LPS and what wont.
Can someone give me a bit of guidance on what I should be looking for?
Thanks in advance for your help! -Tim (the LED ignorant)

Go to rapidled.com they sell specific nano kits and also have a calculator for how many leds you need for what coral you want to keep.

Not to toot my own horn, but I'm always willing to work something out for any tank.
I beat the RAPID led kit prices, you get more power, and you don't have to do the work.

If you can get tank mounted i think you will be happier, no matter the brand.

Check out the options on LEDGroupBuy.com as well. I liked working with RapidLED too. Lots of in-hood retrofit options!

First off, thanks for the responses. I'm reading through the different links posted, trying to get a grasp on this whole LED thing... So question, and this may show how much of a novice that I am... but... could I use something like the 21 watt bulb here? http://www.ebay.com/itm/21w-27w-36w-45w-54w-E27-LED-Coral-Reef-Plant-Grow-Light-Fish-Tank-Aquarium-PAR38/151455888006?_trksid=p2047675.c100009.m1982&_trkparms=aid%3D777000%26algo%3DABA.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D29381%26meid%3D47f6b61f317b4554ade9931aa847ad3a%26pid%3D100009%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26sd%3D111606984346I'm assuming something like this would work inside of a clip on/gooseneck lamp, right?

Definitely usable, but you wouldn't have control over the channels, and I would wonder if you had dimming options at all.
That particular bulb uses green chips in it, which aren't particularly useful to corals. If you like how it makes them look, then that's great, but it won't help with photosynthesis. My other concerns on the spectrum are the lack of diversity. Looks like green/royal blue/10000k
If I was going to use an E27 bulb, I would use THIS ONEAlso found THIS E27 CLAMP which might fit your needs.
Keep in mind that E26 is the standard in the USA, with E27 being the standard in... well... much the rest of the world. Most E27 bulbs can fit in an E26 socket as the differences are very small so the connection to negative and positive can still be made. But not all E27 bulbs will fit in an american E26.

I have always had good experiences with rapidled the have great customer service as well as troubleshooting you can dim any setup you want to build by choosing the right power supply. If you are confused about anything call their cs and mike can walk you through it all. Besides Mr. Moss's orders are always full no wait time!

I'm going to bring this back to life with a few more questions. Since it's going to take a while to get my bigger (still nano realm) tank up and running. I'm hoping to start growing more coral in my 6 gal nano cube. I've never had much luck beyond leathers and GSP with the stock 18 watt PC. I read through several threads on ReefCentral and Nano-Reefs where people have added 9 1 watt LEDs to help supplement, but can't find any type of instruction guide on how do to this. #1 Does anyone here have experience building a basic LED setup into a nano cube? or #2 Would I be smarter to just use something like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Aquarium-LED-Light-ReefBar-12-inch-1ft-453-nm-Actinic-Blue-9W-12-Coral-Moon-/271267652654?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item3f28cfe42e

I have built quite a few led setups into nano hoods. There is plenty of space for mounting options and heat sinks.
I managed to install LEDs in an RSM130 without even removing any of the old PC ballasts or pins.
I'm only so persistent on pushing my little pendants because I know you'll be happy with them and I have faith in what I do. The nano pendants I build would be awesome in a 6 gal, and could be mounted in there very easily. The pendant is only 2.5" tall, so it can fit snug in just about any hood. Hood installs are included in the price of the pendant.

Pete Moss,
I checked out your thread on pendants, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't 60 watt the smallest you build? I'm thinking that would be a bit overkill for a 6 gallon nano. Could you do something like half that wattage?

Nano's are awesome! I've got 3 right now with LED's over them. One is a 6 gallon SPS tank and I had a Kessil 150w over it and while the shimmer it provides is awesome and looks cool, I didn't have very much success with certain colors. Green and orange show up really well and pink and blue don't show up. Another issue was that the light isn't dimmable which turned out to be a big problem. I would always make sure I got frags from people who used LED lights because if they came from Halides, T5s, or something else they would just fry. A while ago I swapped it for the AI nano and absolutely love that light! Zero complaints. I put the kessil over a 10 gallon nano that grows lps and softies and it does great there. Softies and LPS grow really well under it and it really is a pretty looking light.
So, the point is, if you're going to do SPS in your nano, make sure it is dimmable. It is well worth the extra cost and will save you $$ in the long run because you won't kill your corals.

Superman, any wattage is possible! That's the joy of DIY.
You can do 8 separate 1w channels all controlled through dimmers if you want hahahaha.
I do have some recommendations on what we can do for your 6g, shoot me a PM.
