I made the mistake of listening to a certain LFS owner and buying a Skimz skimmer a couple of years ago, in spite of Eric warning me against them.  After running it for 3 years and fighting it, I finally bought a Bubble Magus from Eric, one rated for my 300 gallon tank.  OH MY GOD is this an improvement.  I would strongly advise every one to avoid Skimz as they aren't very well built, the level control just plain sucks, only control you got is the air flow, and they don't skim that well.

The one I got from Eric has been running only 2 days and is already skimming better than the skimz ever did, and it hasn't even finished the break in period.

Word to the wise, listen to Eric, avoid certain LFS owners and their agendas!!!!

I always advise that a good skimmer is key to success. I'm glad you listened to Eric. He taught me.Smile

Agreed a good skimmer is always a great investment. One area I will never skimp on again.

Hey I have a Skimz SM161 on a 250 gallon system. Yes, I purchased per advice of a LFS. Is this why I am always battling algae and diatom blooms? I have a lot of flow. N03, PO4 levels negligible. 22 gallon water changes weekly. Run PhosBan and Carbon.
I try to run the skimmer wet which appear to help a little, but I will admit the thing is very very very sensitive to small fluctuations in operational water depth.
