After not paying attention to the tank (I blame the deer hunt), all the caulerpa in my sump died. I think it grew too well and then collapsed. I should have been pulling some more often. So I figure it is a good time to add the skimmer that has been waiting. It needs time to break in.

Still, everything is looking good.

I cleaned everything a little today and found multiple dead snails. Some stinking, others completely eaten. Three were large turbos. So I have hope things can get better without changing anything after removing this source of waste. I still want to revamp the sump, and maybe get a skimmer, but just so I can feed more. When I put the tang in it showed ick, but after feeding nori often, it seems happy.

I have a plan for the sump. I hope to get to it this weekend. Part of the changes are what Mark recommend right off the bat. But this is it now.

More of tank near night.

I can't believe this is still alive. The blenny picked it to near death before I moved it.

yeaaa, don't get discouraged. Just do the maintenance when you can and don't overfeed. A bad sump isn't bad... the more stuff growing down there, the less bad stuff growing in your main tank. Sometimes life gets a bit more important than a tank. Throw in some carbon, GFO or equivalent, and do a quick water change and that'll help.

I agree that winter tends to increase time with our tanks. Also, I don't think a crappy looking sump is always a bad thing. Sometimes the crappier the sump looks, the better the main display :)

We all go through those slumps in this hobby. Summer is the time that we all tend to neglect our reefs as we are outside, traveling, vacationing and doing other things that take up time. I think you will find that as the weather changes and we start spending more time inside that you will start to spend more time on your tank.

Give it a few more months and see if that holds true for you as well.

It's been over a year. I like the tank but sometimes I think about selling it. This was easier before kids and all the stuff that adds up in life. The sump looks like crap and I have some kind of algae hitchhiker in the display. I think about getting a skimmer or doing more water changes, but time slips by. The positive is that all fish seem happy, except for one jumper I lost. And the frags have turned into colonies.

I bought the stand at Petco(Petco Brooklyn 40 Gallon Metal Tank Stand, $60). I'm thinking about building some frames that I could wrap canvas over and then paint some clowns or corals on it. With magnets in the frames they should stick to the front and sides of the stand, hiding everything and it might look a little better.
Thanks. It seems to be working well. It all makes a little noise, but it is mostly a white noise and I like it.
Nitrates are about zero. Same with phosphate. I should probably start feeding more. I don't know if I'll add more fish, or much of anything. Maybe just let stuff grow.
