Hey all,

I've been given a great opportunity to be the new General Manager of the Layton SeaQuest. I'm curious before I step into this position what everyone's thoughts are about SeaQuest? What does everyone like? What do you dislike? Anything you would like to see happen at SeaQuest?

I start my position on September 10th and couldn't be more excited.

I look forward in hearings everyones thoughts!!!

I have a membership and take my daughter to go feed the stingrays and the flying gurnards. I've always loved the hands on feeding but felt some of their displays needed serious help (the seahorse and jellyfish specifically) but one of the things i continuously gripe about is the lack of information of some of the exhibits.

I was just there the other day and noted the seahorse tank has been redone and they look happier, but the jellyfish tank still looks to be too much current as the jellies are rubbing against the bottom.

Having worked there in the past, I can tell you a few things from first hand knowledge. The staff is great - they do their best with what they're given to care for the animals. Corporate on the other hand is difficult to work with/for. They don't allow ANY of your input on how to do husbandry, you do it their way or you're out of a job. From my experience (any virtually any other reefers who have worked for SeaQuest), their marine husbandry practices are outdated and the corporate office, specifically the CEO, doesn't allow any new ideas or ways to do things. We were literally told not to do our own research on husbandry practices. Anyone who follows the Standard Operating Procedures without question can thrive at SeaQuest, it just gets frustrating when you know that there's a better way to do things there.

I'm thrilled to see that they're finally getting someone with hobby experience, during my time there almost none of the marine husbandry staff had any experience with saltwater aquariums.

Jeff,

Thanks for your your reply. I've been doing a lot of research and talking with the current GM. Hopefully we can go in and make some changes for the better. Update SOP's and help SeaQuest thrive.

I appreciate your input.

Jeff,
Usernames cannot be changed. You can create a new profile with a different name and I can remove this old one if you would like.

1stupidpunk,

Thanks for the input about SeaQuest. I noticed several issues while doing a walkthrough before accepting the position and brought them up during negotiations . I feel as though I have the support from corporate to make changes for the better.

As far as the seahorse and jellyfish tank I will be addressing these when I step into the position.

Thanks again for your insight.

i know from some of the food side of things there are some frustrating aspects for the staff. they buy big blocks of frozen foods then have to try and thaw it out or use a saw to cut it and there is a lot of waste. message me sometime and lets talk food.

Congrats on the position by the way!

Awesome, glad to hear it. Congrats on the new position, I'm happy to see that there will finally be a reef hobbyist in charge!
