Topic: Help! My clown's eyes are buldging out Posted: October 15 2006 at 12:37pm |
I've had two clowns for about 3 years now in my reef tank, and just this morning I just noticed one of them has both his eyes buldging out. I think it's called popeye. What can I do for him? I don't have another tank for quaranteen.

You'll need to quarantine him. . . and treat w/ antibiotics. (If you need a 10gal tank let me know)

Do you think he will die if I leave him in the tank and are my other fish at risk? How much for the 10 gallon? Do you have a pump or something to circulate the water? I am in Syracuse, are you near? Thanks for your help.

Three years is a good long time.
What changes have occurred within the last few weeks?
Popeye is hard to successfully treat.
Quarantine tanks are more trouble than they are worth and usually cause more stress than good. Only if a medicated quarantine tank has been running for a while with other fish in it where the biological filtration process has become established, will it be of much value.
The condition seems to be only mildly contagious, with many individuals seeming to be immune from it's effect.
I would at least use Garlic Oil, per previously posted instructions, to help keep other conditions from worsening. A drop of Garlic Oil marinated without water, in each cube of thawing frozen food, does not stop bacterial infections like Pop-eye, but it can't hurt, just in case the fish stresses and parasites find it a welcome host.

One of my anthias has pop-eye as well. It started yesterday. Garlic is a good idea. What is the prognosis?

If you want the tank and the powerhead, I'll only charge for the powerhead ($7).
I live in WVC - let me know.

There's no way I can catch it. I don't want to stress it out more. I'll try Mark's advice.

I have had 2 different fish heal from popeye by feeding garlic and doing regular water changes.

Amie - great advice. Water changes. This is the best thing you can do for the fish.
The pop-eye is likely the result of an infection. The fish may have injured the eye somehow. It is not very contagious so I wouldn't recommend removing the fish to a quarantine tank.
Keep the water quality high, provide adequate food and a healthy fish can heal itself.

Wow, you better hope that quote never finds its way to any other site.
