sorry this is kind of a dumb question but i just bought a 12 gallon nano and the only heater i have laying around is one for 40 to 60 gallon tanks. if i were to use this heater how would it work on my nano?
I'd use it. A larger heater just doesn't need to stay on as long.
The biggest risk in using an oversize heater is if it sticks on and cooks the tank quickly.
An undersize heater cannot cause as much of a problem because it may not be able to heat the tank too hot or it may take so long for it to get the tank hot that the tank acclimates and you notice it getting too warm before it is a problem.
I always set my heaters at 75 and check the thermometers every day
