Are button polyps the same as palythoas? And does anyone know what these are?

Yes and no, Those are paly's. Zoanthids are refered to as button as well.

I agree with Dion on that pic, but Zoanthids can grow like that too, when they are trying to stretch up to receive more light and/or are an old colony that has become crowded.
There are Zoanthids, Palythoas and Protopalythoas, all called by the easy common name of "Button Polyps"
