Topic: Hello WMAS Posted: February 10 2012 at 10:49am |
Hello,
I was told about this forum from bill down at saltwater paradise yesterday so i figured i would join. I am new to the whole salt water tank thing, but its something i have wanted to dive into for awhile.
The stars decided to align and allow me to acquire a Red Sea Max 130 for a great deal. I have just gotten the tank home and got it cleaned up and ready.
Yesterday i stopped by Saltwater paradise and picked up 35 pounds of LS and some LR. Bill was a huge help and even let me use a bucket to take everything home in, A+ for him and his shop. I am stopping by today to grab the rest of my water and get everything up and going to i can let the tank cycle.
Now my only question is, do any of you have advice on any gear i should get up front that would make my life easier. I currently have salt, hydrometer, picking up new RSM lights, heater (for water changes), 2 digital temp gauges. I am sure there is a ton more i am missing so any advice would be helpful.
Here is a picture of my tank before i got it cleaned and partially ready.
I will update pics as much as i can while i get everything set up.

Welcome to Utah's oldest and best Aquarium Society! Feel free to ask anything on this board, everyone starts somewhere so don't be afraid to ask even about the little things!
Things to make your life easier? An auto top off changed my life! Best thing I did. I'm not sure if that redsea as the built in autotop off that some come with but if it does make sure you use it!

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!
I am sure i will have questions later on that i will be happy to ask, i don't plan on moving along on this project fast at all, as i have heard time is the key in a tank.
Jwoo, unfortunately this tank doesn't come with an auto-top off so that is something that will have to come about later.

Welcome to the WMAS
Ask, Ask, ASK all the questions you want - someone here almost always has the answer for you!
Pictures are GREAT and very helpful when you are trying to fix a problem or troubleshoot something
This Club has some amazing resources for you - people like Adam Blundell (our resident Marine Biologist); Mark Peterson ("Mr. Utah Rock"); Tyler Christiansen, owner of Elite Aquatics and acrylic fabricator extraordinaire; your friend Bill Davis aka "Sitaga" from SW Paradise; and so many, many others...
This is THE place to come for all your reefkeeping needs. As Justin said, WMAS is the "Oldest and Best Aquarium Society" in Utah. With the biggest, and busiest saltwater website and Message Board in the Intermountain West. We don't need to bribe people to get them to post here (unlike some other boards)... they come here because this is where all the action is
And we have some of the best reef systems in the entire country right here in Utah, right here at WMAS
So, welcome - and enjoy your new tank!

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. i stopped by bills once again today and picked up the last of my LR and RO. currently running 35 pounds of sand and 36 pounds of LR.
i got all the water LS and LR in the tank and now i am letting it clear up so i can have the wife aquascape everything for me in the morning.
i did happen to notice as it cleared up that something small was swaying around on one of the little rocks. as time past i check it again nothing was there. went back an hour later and to my suprise it was back again. it looks like it could be a small feather duster.
As for home vists that is something i would deffinantly love to do. if anyone in the ogden are is willing to show me what a great reef actully looks like that would be awesom.
I also hope to have pics up for everyone tomorrow night.

Awesome. I'm sure you'll find some O-town reefers. If you ever make it down here check out my tank, Dion, Linn Griffith, pilot, ... man there are quite a few of us in south davis.
