Sorry, I missed this somehow. Yes, algae produce spores as part of their reproduction that must be introduced into an aquarium. Some algae also produce runners, etc. in order to reproduce. Spores can be introduced through water, rock, coral, etc. (and they're too tiny to see without a microscope.) I started with everything dry to avoid the algal spores and other hitchhikers. My QT process helps keep it out too.
