 Topic: Salinity ?

I have seen multiple post saying that salinity at 1.023 is to low. I have kept my salinity there for the 5 years i have been in this Obsession. So with that being said where is everyone else keeping there salinity and Why. Just curious, i am not closed minded but the odds of me raising it is not good. Oh and yes i use a good refractor that i keep Calibrated.

Just a quick note...1.023 is a measurement of specific gravity (it's a ratio), not salinity. Salinity is expressed in PPT.
Anyway, I run 35 ppt...or about 1.026. That's the NSW level, and I figure that's probably a good place to start. Plus, it's easier for me to keep my parameters (alk/ca/mag) up high enough at that level.

It's too low? That tends to be where I keep my salinity too.
Things seem happy there, if I have serious evap my salinity sure isn't going to go past "safe" before I get to it when keeping that range. I've seen 1.025 thrown around but seems like something better kept on a stable auto top-off.

Natural saltwater is 1.0264...which is an average. Parts of the ocean are much higher and also much lower. That's why a range is fine. I figure since our specimens come from all over...might as well use something averaged out too. If I had all Australian inhabitants...I'd probably find the average salinity of Australia.

I knew about the NSW average but in the past always had problems at that level on manual top-off systems, seemed like parameters swung more wildly during evap so I kept it around 1.023
I'm sure closer to natural is better but maintainable in captivity is another story with some setups (like mine). If I was running a larger system on auto top-off I'd be more inclined to go towards natural.

But 1.023 is fine, Paul
Avoiding big swings in SG (more than 0.001 from highest to lowest) is far more important IMO than the particular point you choose to keep it at. Especially for SPS.

Agreed any swing in anything is not good. I have been questioned multiple times about why my salt was so low.

1.025. i am dosing 2 part, and it is hard for me to keep my mag up with a lower number. mag helps me keep my alk/cal in line.

Higher salinity allows you to have more alk, calc and mag in the water, I run mine at 35 PPT or 1.025. I checked a frag that was bagged in tank water from a LFS and it was 1.023 and the tank was stunning!

I'm a 1.023 kinda guy, but I noticed a world of difference in health in my corals when I plumbed in an auto topoff. The salinity doesn't jump around anymore.

Keeping my salinity stable at 1.026 has been one of the things that has most helped my coral growth and health. Since adding auto top off my salinity has been pretty consistent and my corals have made noticeable improvements.

Swings, as others have mention, are IMO a much bigger issue then Salinity. Anything kept stable between 1.023 - 1.026 is fine. The corals don't care but they do if it ping pongs around!
