I was looking at this online:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Aquarium-Reef-LED-Lamp-20W-14000K-White-150W-Metal-Halide-alternative-Light-/281069793908?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item417110b274

It says it is an alternative to a 150 watt Metal Halide. Are there any experts who know if this could could actually produce the shimmer and coral growth with only 20W, or is that just total BS?

Thanks!

Let us know how these work out.  Would be interesting to see what they will do.

The Ebay model looks like one of the compond LEDs in a single fixture to make the 20 Watts.  The 120 degree angle would lead me to believe that they don't use an optic.  Wonder if it dims?

Brandon, let us know how the AJM lights work out.

It would shimmer the question is the color temp right? And would you be happy with it.  Also Led's don't use reflectors like MH do so you would most likely get a beam effect even with 120d lens.(Which is what give the shimmer)  Can't answer the coral growth question without testing but 20W is not very much LED power in my book but depends on tank size how close to the tank and such.. Side note with LED's seems more important to have more Blue so in the video he is showing there he is using 4 total, 2 blue 20w and 2 of the whites so he says, and not the ones above he is using a 30W set. And this is on only a 46g tank.  Did a quick check on the Epistar led and looks like people are using the chips for DIY builds, not as common as the Cree and Phillips but should work though is to be noted that they are cheap Taiwanese led.  And doing some quick calculations the Crees still have a better Lumens per watt then the epistar.  So if power savings is your goal you will get some but not all.. As someone who uses the matrix leds for all my DIY lighting I will say they do work pretty well, I use the 10w's rather than the 20w's because they're at the peak efficiency envelope for emitters (9x1w in 3 x series 3 x parallel at 1000ma total to 333ma per emitter) lower current = higher efficiency, which is also why the led companies give you their lumens per watt rating based on around 200-350ma, even cree does this since thats the only place they actually hit their lumens per watt claims, higher current = higher resistance = diminishing returns as you go higher.

120 degrees is no optics, also the shimmer is from any single point light source, it has very little to do with optics, no matter how much a led focuses out over the surface of the water if it was coming from one spot there will be shimmer, the reason fluorescent doesn't is because the light source it's self is spread out so far over the surface so you have blended refraction to the point you don't really see it anymore. A 120 degree output led has a spread that looks pretty much like a halide in my experience.

Heres a little quick video of my 12g with 10w matrix leds over it (previously had been running another tank for a year with 10w matrix leds as well):

Not exactly telling you which way to go just expounding for the sake of informing, brand isn't as big of deal as people might think, the most important part is having spectra peaks where you need them, and thats not hard to pin down where leds peak, the vast majority of white leds (cool white, neutral white, etc) will always tend to peak around the 450-455nm range and have about the same curve regardless of brand, and royal blues can generally be ordered in 445nm-447nm, 450nm-453nm, 453-455nm, 455-457nm, 457nm-460nm, 460-470nm and other ranges easily.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I read through this as well. It's a longer document, but full of scientific reasonings behind light choices:

I have been thinking about those same LEDs on eBay. It looks like the dealer is pretty good so I may give it a shot
