Im reading all these articles and watching many youtube videos about growing your own live phyto (almost all the vids or instructions were for nannochloropsis) and almost all use the same idea of growing it in clear 1 liter bottles while using tubing with an air pump to keep water movement. Almost all the videos i watched the people put the grow systems in a closet or on a shelf and just set a single bulb strip light next to it.

I am curious as to why you wouldnt just put them near a window and let some natural sunlight grow the algae.... to much heat maybe?

Anyways if anyone would be kind enough to share some live phyto growing wisdom with me that would be awesome....

Aloha Geoff,

If wisdom is what you are looking for, my advice is to just buy BSD Tahitian Blend. We just bought a large bottle to share with others for a reasonable price. I've grown 100's of gallons of phyto over the years and eventually got smart when algae paste became more available and lower cost. Phytoplanton is time consuming and crashes so easily.

Whoops, just realized you are in Tremonton. We are having a family reunion at Camperworld in Garland in a month. I could drop some by. Smile

Oh and I grew it in several larger containers so I'd have more and have a back up when one batch crashed.

Mahalo,

It should grow well in a sunny window. When I grew phyto I had several bottles (not something everyone wants in their window sill) and wanted maximum growth (lighting 24 hours a day).

Marks wisdom is wise, as I also use BSD algea paste (I use several different flavors). But at the end of the day, if you grow your own, you will be able to say "I did that".

I have no immediate need for the phyto, im not attempting to raise rotifers/clowns.... I just suddenly found myself with an abundance of free time (thanks to the government furlough). So while cleaning up the fish room i notice large amounts of air line tubing, old containers, a bunch of old air pumps and i thought... i should really do ... something...

Maybe ill keep brainstorming for something else beneficial to do that wont require much money or equipment.

Thats not a bad idea. I have hatched live brine many times before but i haven't had much success in raising them to adult stage. Looking on youtube now im guessing that i fouled the water to quickly using to much powder spirulina.
