has anybody ever see which negative effects having an imbalance between mag sulfate and mag chloride in a tank? Closed polyps, slow growth, etc?

With the myriad of more likely causes for closed polyps and slowed growth, it would be extremely hard to pinpoint the exclusive use of Epsom Salt as the cause. I have never seen it but I believe it can take a long time for that to become a problem, especially if regular water changes are done. It's my opinion that the Sulfur process/cycle in a system with appropriate biofiltration can handle quite a lot of Sulfur.

If coral in your tank is having the aforementioned problems, maybe an investigative discussion could help, even for an excellent hobbyist like yourself. A pic and description is a good place to start.

Remind me again how big your system is? How much is the most you've dosed of Epsom salts at once? How long have you been dosing just mag sulfate? This system hasn't been up too long, right?

The amount of magnesium in magnesium sulfate is pretty small, with the sulfur part quite large. However, NSW level of sulfur is quite high, so it's hard to overdose. If you suddenly dosed a massive amount of mag sulfate, then yes, I'd expect to see closed polyps. My husband accidentally dosed an entire gallon of magnesium sulfate into my 40g tank about 8 years ago (it wasn't labelled, and he thought it was top-off water). I had closed polyps, some recession, and I think I lost a little bit (can't remember so long ago!) But, it wasn't massive, especially when you consider a gallon of mag sulfate in a 40g tank.

Bottom line...it's possible, but rare. The math/chemistry makes it pretty hard to believe except in extreme cases.

yea, it was only a couple cups into 150g. Probably not a huge amount considering the tank size.

have you noticed any other random reasons for lack of polyp extension?

The only other random thing, that pops into my head is a rogue dwarf angel, have you
recently added someone who might be nipping when you aren't looking, or one that may have just found the delicious polyps? I've just experienced this for myself with a flame that decided he really enjoys sps, and my sps all looked receded I thought I was burning them because I had just increased the intensity on my leds, as I was staring at my box, I watched that cute little bugger as he made he way around, just a nipping just about every freaking coral in there, just a thought       ?

What type of polyps? Zoas? Other softies? LPS? SPS? Only in one area of the tank or all throughout? Any other symptoms? Are you running carbon?

I would ask the same questions as above two posts.
Also, I've noticed that hobbyists do have good inklings of trouble. Above you said "lighting may be an issue". Please explain why you are wondering that.

jbuck, you raise a good question... I've noticed my rabbitfish munchin zoas and around the same time is when they started receding..... I think I may have found my culprit.

That's one way to test the resilience of the vows of matramony.
