I'm considering a blue tang for my 125 gallon tank, Liveaquaria recommends 180 gallons. I'm curious how other people have had blue tang's in less than 180 gallon tanks, what is their temperament and health status? Are they not a good idea for 125 gallon tank?

I would consider it. This is a standard 125 that is 6 feet long, correct? IMO a longer tank is more important than one that deeper for these kind of fish. Don't buy a 10 inch fish though. Get a smaller one. It will live many years before it could possibly begin to be an issue.
1. if it actually lives that long.
2. if you stay in the hobby that long.
Healthy, happy fish just need to be fed the right foods in the right amounts. Fish aggression is directly related to how much food is available. Fat, well fed fish are less aggressive, or not aggressive at all.
I have many so called aggressive fish in my tank living together just fine. No problems for me.

I have a beautiful blue tang in a 90 gallon that started out the size of a nickel! In about a year it is now about 3-4 inches and probably wont continue to grow at that rate... However it does just fine in a 90, no problems at all! Mine is fairly peaceful with the rest and gets along nicely.

I have 4 tangs in my (6 foot) 150g:
- 6" Naso
- 4" Yellow
- 4" Powder Blue
- 2" Hippo
And they are FINE ðŸ‘

I've a blue tang in my 90 gallon. It is the largest of all since I let the Vlamingi tang go. Doing just fine.

I kept one in my 125 for 3+ years. He was up around 8" when I tore down the tank and sold him... Not quite as large as his buddy who was a 10" Naso. They did great together in the tank.

Other than being prone to disease you should be fine imho I had a good sized 5 inch one in my 75 for 3 years before It was sold and it moved into a 120

I would really like a blue tang, but I keep reading about them needing huge tanks. Granted, my 55 is pretty small. If I got a small one, say 2", how long would it have before it needed to be in a larger tank?
Maybe I just need a bigger tank... Lol

Bird World always has tiny blue tangs that are 1-1.5 inches. Start out with a nice small one.

Sure, that's the idea. But what I'm wondering is if I should expect 6 months, 1 year, 5 years? And how big is too big for the tank? I don't want to torture the fish. I know a 1" one would be fine, but they do grow. :) I am willing to trap it and move it to a larger tank, either mine or someone else's, when needed. But I want to make sure I know when that is. I really should visit Bird World. One of the few LFS I haven't stopped into yet.

Bob, did you add all your tangs at the same time? 150g is what I have too, and I've been saving the tangs for last since all I hear is how aggressive they can be.

I added them all with in a couple of weeks of each other.
Generally speaking, when I add fish I try to at least two at the same time; this helps avoid a single "new" fish getting picked on by everyone else. With two new additions, if there is any aggression, at least it's getting split between the two new fish.
And it takes about a month for fish to get really territorial,once they are put into a new aquarium.
So, I would say, add two tangs at a time, every 2 to 3 weeks, until you're at your limit.
