same thing happens to me. I don't think you're doing anything wrong, but rather that the image uploader on this site really isn't great. I usually link to imgur.com as its easier and the quality of the image is preserved.

I have a feeling it's not a problem with this forums ability to upload pics. It may have something to do with whether you rotate the phone clockwise or counter clockwise to take pics. 
OR
I assume you may have already tried turning off the automatic screen rotation and then taking pics with the phone right side up and upside down, right? Did it make any difference?
