I need to put some snails in my refugium to help with the algae but I'm worried because my return pump doesn't have anything over the pipe. I don't want to get them sucked up into my pump. They make strainers for most pumps and also to fit pvc pipe.

I normally just make strainers. Put some pvc pipe on the intake to your pump, drill it full of holes and cap the end.
