Well, I thought I had a build thread on here, but I can't find it. So, here's a new one. :)

We built the stand and canopy back in 2009 in Ohio. It all came down in 2011 for our move to Utah. Unfortunately, the moving company banged the stand up a bit, and I lost most of my corals between the move and the 2011 windstorm. Anyway, here's the build...along with some "now" coral photos. :)

In Ohio it was set up as a 2-sided tank. Here we have it set up as an island. Since we're military and can't predict our houses, we made it so it can be an island, peninsula, 2 or 1 sided.

Now for the current inhabitants:

I get to see this tank a couple of times a week and it's amazing.  When I get to occasionally tank set I have to be careful because i catch myself watching it for a long time and really should be working.  Nice tank.

Aw, thank you! I've taken two polyps off since 2007, and that was only to make a backup in case I ever lost the mother. So, I doubt I'll ever sell a piece, but I'll keep you in mind. :)

Aw, thanks!

Right after these photos were taken, I had a problem with some carbon/GFO. I must've added too much or something b/c everything bleached out (I added the same amount I always use, so I don't know). It's just now starting to come back, but I'm kicking myself since I lost several months of good growth time.

Looks great Nikki. I guess it's a good thing we haven't swapped coral yet. So sorry about the carbon issues. We have been in a similar situation and it is heart breaking. We will be starting a job in Layton next week. I would love to swing by and see things in person.

By the way, isn't MH lighting a little archaic? Wink

Yeah, everything is just about to the correct coloring, except the Red Robin I have for you. We'd love to have you over, just let me know when.

MH isn't archaic for a 31" deep tank. Although, we are looking at switching over to the 100W Ecoxotic Cannons within the next year or so. They'll probably pay for themselves in the first 6 months! LOL

LOL I think that is my issue with my full tank shots, I'm not liking them because they look really washed out until I go in and correct them afterwards and then they still don't look as good as what it does in person:)

Hey Johnny! How's your piece of it looking?

I have it about 25" down from the water surface (2 x 400W MH lights are 10" above that), and I have it tucked partially into a little cave area. It does not like light.

Saying that...the corals I got that were dying originally almost always do better than the ones I just buy healthy. Hmm...more attention = healthier coral...imagine that! LOL

For those of you who don't know, my tank has been less-than-ideal the last 6 months. My skimmer broke several times, my lights died, my Apex went out, and my dosing pump went on the fritz. Growth and colors aren't great, but here are some updated pics.

Updated actinic shot (the entire underside is covered in babies):

My favorite SPS:

I'm finally starting to recover from all the disasters (skimmer dying, lights dying, Apex dying, dosing pump dying, etc.) This is why you don't buy all of your equipment new at once...

Anyway, I took some photos before the new LED lights went on. Those pictures are still to come. [<:o)]

Yea hold out for a yellow.  She is quite shy when others are around. I have never seen her nip at my acros, but I have seen her nip at my gorgonia . I wouldn't have a reef without one now. I've had a regal angel in my tanks for ten years now.

First I would use a custom white balance, pumps turned off, and no flash. Second I would shoot in raw format and adjust in post processing.

Thanks Mike. I'll work on the white balance. I've never post-processed anything, but I do have Photoshop (and my P&S camera will shoot in RAW). I'll start practicing.

Here's a teaser on the new lights. Ignore all the wires...it's a lot cleaner than how it looks there...

You should see the polyp extension at night!! I have a couple acros that extend polyps up to 1/2". I'll try to get some night shots up.

I still don't know the secret to good sps PE. Sometimes it's great...or nonexistent other times. I haven't found a reliable cause...

Nikki, Whats the third to last one in your pictures? Echinata of some kind? Maybe Pearlberry? White tubular structure with blue/purple tips.

I can't believe how long you have made us wait for this lighting update.

The Acro was sold to me as the ORA Hawkins Echinata. I'm pretty confident in the source, but it does look slightly different.

Ugh, my paper is over 80 pages long, and I'm nowhere near done. You'd never believe how much work has gone into the LEDs. I promise, it'll be worth it.

Fine, fine, fine...here are some really horrid shots with terrible white balance... It's not done. I'm still adjusting things....

So Nikki I was doing some research and I have now convinced myself that the Echinata that Nick, Thu and myself have is the Hawkins and that yours is an Ice Fire Echinata. Could that be the case?

Nope, nope, nope. I have the Tyree Icefire Echinata...they're totally different. I swear it's the Hawkins...looks like every other one I've seen. I'll double check with the previous owner if he's still around.
