so I found about three red flat worms on my boyfriends Duncans yesterday of course we treated the whole tank even though we didn't see any more. Anyway that got me thinking I have tons of little white bugs on the walls of my tank that are much smaller but have the same shape. Are these flat worms too? Yes, those are flatworms as well, but they are considered less invasive as the more common species of red planaria. They are photosynthetic, so they are often found on the glass on on light-facing surfaces. What's the best way to treat them? Get something that eats them? So I did treat my tank last night and was planning on doing a water change today is that the best way to go? ------------- Creating my own ocean |

Mmm...there's not a great way to treat these, unfortunately. They're not bad...they just aren't pretty either. Not much will eat them. Wrasses have been shown to not actually digest flatworms. They bite them and spit them back out. If there's any neurological tissue left in the flatworm remnants, they can regenerate. Blue velvet nudibranchs are a bit slow for these flatworms...they can move at a decent clip. And, it'll probably starve to death before it will eradicate all the flatworms. Melanurus ate all of my flatworms in 2 days. Flatworms were M.I.A. and the wrasse, well, it looked like I do after my Thanksgiving second meal. ------------- Call or Text (801)834-3119 |

This is all good news guys Thank you! I went abs bought a wrasse today in hopes it will bring the population down I plan on doing a small water change tomorrow as precaution because I did put flatworm control in my tank last night. A little bit of information I have picked up along the way, which may help calm next time. There are many predators and prey in the ocean, even down to the tiniest little microbe which eats other microbes. This is the cycle of life and it provides balance to the environment of our little piece of the ocean. It is fascinating to learn about what all these different organisms eat. (Do you know what flatworms eat?) I often suggest to hobbyists that of the 1000's of animal species that live in our reef aquariums, there is a handful of pests we really need to worry about.
