Turns out I couldn't stay away from the hobby for too long. I took a two year break after parting out my 120g mixed reef and, although the break was refreshing, I'm very excited to be back. I have been lurking on the forums for a few weeks now and waiting for my equipment shipments to arrive.

My goal is to keep this setup as automated as possible so I can just sit back and enjoy it. Also with the tank being in our main living area, I'm trying to make equipment as "clean" as possible. As far as corals, I have always been a fan of the "nightclub LSD look" with super bright corals popping under LEDs, so finding the right pieces will be fun.

This is the Innovative Marine Nuvo 30. It is an all-in-one tank which is new to me but looks promising.

Neptune Apex Controller: With wanting automation and customization, a controller is a must.
http://s1118.photobucket.com/user/wscaycho/media/IMG_0945_zpsmzfzu7b4.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

Eheim Jager TruTemp Heater: This got pretty good reviews but there is another heater I may switch to.
http://s1118.photobucket.com/user/wscaycho/media/IMG_0941_zpsymdexqw2.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

Ecotech Radion XR30w Light: Love all the custom colors and programs available with LEDs, not to mention the royal blues when I feel like staring at corals. I may swap upgrade this to a newer Radion in the future.

Jebao WP-10 Powerhead: Read great reviews on this pump and it is controllable with my Apex.

IM Minimax Desktop Reactor: Picked this up used from a member and fits perfectly in the rear chamber. Plan on running either carbon or biopellets. Gotta do more research... http://s1118.photobucket.com/user/wscaycho/media/IMG_0944_zpsnoqjpge1.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

Red Sea Coral Pro Salt: People on other forums swear by this salt so I'll give it a try.
http://s1118.photobucket.com/user/wscaycho/media/IMG_0940_zpsmukpza05.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

Carib-Sea Fiji Pink: It's weird to call sand beautiful, but it is. Hopefully this live sand speeds up my tank cycle.

I picked up about 20lbs of live rock a local who was tearing down his tank. It was completely covered in purple coralline and the only hitchhikers I could see were micro tube worms, which I think are awesome. No pictures of the rock but I will update later with pictures of our aquascape.

Annnnnnnnnd He's back! Love the tank, love the Apex, Love the Radion, Love the rw-10 (that is going to be a ton of flow in a 30), Love the salt. I would go with the Titanium heater. I give 6 months before it's drilled and has a sump.

And just in time for the reef tour!

Welcome back Billy!

Thank you! As much as I'd like a sump with a refugium and more water volume, I am really enjoying the simplicity. (At least that's what I say now, right?)

Hey Jackie long time! I had my doubts about the WP-10 but after playing around with placement I'm loving it. I just bought the adapter to be able to run it off of my controller.

Tank has been running/cycling for about 2-3 weeks so I'm trying to catch up on posting my progress. This was the aquascape we chose. I like the minimalist look and my wife's only requirement was a cave for the fish to swim through so we're both happy.

Hard to see with this picture but I'll add more later today.

My setup is very similar! I'm running a Nuvo Fusion 20 with a XR30W Pro Gen 3, Neptune Apex w/lab grade probes, Neptune DOS, MP10wQD, dual Mame Skimmers, Sicce Syncra 1.5 return, Cobalt Neo-Therm 75w and a Tunze Nano ATO.

I can leave for a week without a sitter, come home and my tank still looks super happy! (:

I have my MP10 dialed two dots from max capacity on Reef Crest and I still feel like I need another on the other side... Crazy right?

One of the first things I would do is upgrade the return if you haven't already. The Sicce Syncra 1.5 or even the 2.0 would be perfect and they're virtually silent.

Great advice haha! I had actually upgraded to the 1.0 because I'm weird and like the idea of water sitting in the filter chambers a LITTLE bit longer. And I personally don't care how much my return pump contributes to flow in the tanks. I would have loved to get a mp10wqd like you but the budget didn't allow it right now. I work in SLC and I'd love to check out your setup sometime. I'll PM ya.

LOL. I've added a couple "glowing" pieces that were on my "buy-ASAP" list. I'll post pics as catch up on this thread.

Thanks bro. I still remember the first time I saw your biocube like 5 years ago and I couldn't believe all those weird colorful things were alive. That's when I knew I wanted to do a reef tank. Then I drove like 2 hours to buy a crappy 55g setup with a siphon overflow. That guy hooked me up with my first coral ever which were brown palys and you told me they were cool even though they weren't. So many memories Cry!

We are planning on buying a bigger home sometime in the next two years. With that in mind, I will most probably wait for the new house to upgrade. This nano hopefully will be enough to keep me busy. =)

By the way, the reason I can set up this nano is because my son outgrew his time-out box.

And this was water going in. I had not received my return pump yet and was anxious to get the cycle going so don't mind the heater randomly in the display. And I also did not have enough water to fill the whole tank. It was a ghetto start.

You're already thinking about a bigger tank...you're not going to make it 8 months.

The Sicce syncra 1.0 return pump had arrived and I was able to get water in the tank. I made a huuuuge rookie mistake for the first few days of the cycle. I used saltwater (purchased) that I assumed would be an appropriate salinity. When I got a refractometer a few days later, I realized my salinity was 1.012, so my mistake for not checking and it probably killed off a lot of beneficial bacteria. Surprisingly though, the micro tube worms in the LR were out and about seeming happy.

Don't mind the awkward wire from the apex and cable hanging from the light. Those will be organized too.

I took the next day to set up the controller and organize some wires using a mounting board. I'm using a Netgear wireless adapter so I can control my tank from anywhere in the world and get alerts if things are going wrong.

I setup my Tunze ATO which goes through the wall into the pantry where I have a 15g tub of RO water. The tank is evaporating about a quart a day which means I can just leave my tank alone for a pretty long time.

Almost a week into the cycle, the ammonia became undetectable so I added a percula clownfish (bought from a member in this forum) and continued to dose Seachem Stability to help establish bacterial colonies. The clown did a great job at boosting the cycle and ammonia/nitrite was again undetectable even after a couple days of not dosing Stability. My daughter loved having Nemo at home. (If you have small children and don't let them call you clownfish Nemo, you're just angry.)

You can see the start of an ugly green algae and brown diatom bloom in the first pic. Gross. I didn't take anymore pics until after that cleared up.

I did TONS of research on nano skimmers and needed one that fit these criteria:

1. Super quiet; I hate that whistling/bubbling noise
2. Powerful skimming: I've always believed in very powerful skimming
3. Size: It had to fit in a rear chamber. HOB skimmers were out of the question since they do not jive with the "clean" look i'm going for.

After reading countless reviews and watching user videos, etc, I chose the Tunze 9004 and I couldn't be happier.

I never imagined that nano skimmers could actually do much but this bad boy went to work right away. I would recommend this skimmer to any nano reefer.

I have always been a skeptic about NANO protein skimmers since I have had a less that good experiences with the one I had on my Nano. It required a lot of maintenance and barely even worked.

That one looks like it's doing a fine job!Good to know there is a decent option out there is I set up a smaller tank again.

Yea I was super skeptical at first. Reviews talked about a "break-in" period, and water level problems, etc, etc but this thing has started skimming heavy right away.

Jawbreaker mushroom. I knew this was a must-have for my tank, and a perfect "tester" because of how hardy mushrooms are. I'm working on taking pictures of my other additions but haven't had a chance to pull out the nice camera.

For the last week or so my tank has been consuming approximately 0.8 dkh of alkalinity each day. I have only had a couple tiny stony corals so I'm blaming the thick purple coraline algae on the love rock for sucking up the alkalinity. I've never used Kalkwasser but I've always heard amazing things about it so I filled my ATO reservoir with 10g of 1/2 potency limewater (1tsp/gal). I'll have to keep an eye on my pH and parameters to adjust kalk concentration as needed.

Do any of you Kalkwasser gurus have any advice for a kalk newbie?

Posted By: BillyC
Date Posted: May 20 2016 at 10:12pm
Kalkwasser is going well these last few days. It's definitely keeping my ph between 8.2-8.3, even at night.

Doug at Birdworld hooked me up with the other 2 corals on top of my list (he has a ton of cool Frags if you haven't stopped by lately). My favorite zoas of all time, Rastas. They're a classic, super bright, and you can't beat the color combo IMO. this frag started off as 3p and now I'm up to 7p so things are going well.

Space invader pectinia. This is a terrible pic but can't believe how this thing glows.

Also added a Valentini Puffer. This guy has more personality than my dog. They are not considered reef safe because they are known to eat snails, hermits, clams, and sometimes coral. After lots of research, I took a chance and he's by far my favorite fish I've ever owned. He munched on a single nassarius snail but hasn't touched any other CUC (although it's still no guarantee forever). He started off eating but fairly skinny at the fish store. Now he's a pig with a potbelly starting.

I had a Valentini Puffer for a few months.  It killed a lot of snails.  The problem I had is the puffer wouldn't eat the entire snail, the snail would rot away some place behind a rock or where I couldn't see it.  They do have personality though, but I won't have another.

I can see that being a huge problem especially in a nano. I've been lucky with this one. Mine does like to "taste" some acropora but I think a taste is all he needs.

I have been adding a lot of cool coral that I don't have time to properly photograph. Here's the new centerpiece of the tank, courtesy of Skylar at Reef Legends, a pink rainbow wellso. I see pinks, reds, teals, purples, etc.

And just for fun, a progression pic. Rastas have doubled in polyp count and have grown large heads. Definitely one of the pieces I'm more excited about colonizing.

I have a pretty cool coral coming in tomorrow morning. Hopefully it'll open up enough for some pics! Thanks to all those who comment and follow this thread.
