Have you tried checking it in the sink?<br /><br />I once had a pump where the impeller had to be in the proper rotation sequence or something <img border="0" src="http://www.utahreefs.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif" border="0"> I found that when I plugged it in if I gave it a short burst of momentary electricity and then quickly pushed the elecrical plug all the way in, the impeller seemed to get jolted into the right spin or oscillation or something. The noise would only come back when there was a power drop, which wasn't too often.<br /><br />I'm doubtful that sponge/foam rubber will dampen sound underwater, but it will make good biological filtration media!]]>

There should be no wiggle-room between the shaft and the back. You would also want to make sure that the propeller is clean.</P>]]>
