Does the noise occur when the pump has no back pressure? Have you tried checking it in the sink?

I once had a pump where the impeller had to be in the proper rotation sequence or something I found that when I plugged it in if I gave it a short burst of momentary electricity and then quickly pushed the elecrical plug all the way in, the impeller seemed to get jolted into the right spin or oscillation or something. The noise would only come back when there was a power drop, which wasn't too often.

Also - make sure that the shaft is all the way inserted into the back of the unit. There should be no wiggle-room between the shaft and the back. You would also want to make sure that the propeller is clean.
