Author: Mark Peterson
Subject: 64420
Posted: May 17 2013 at 2:50am

Aloha,

How unfortunate. I would suspect that even after just 5 minutes in the salt water any electrical circuit board is going to be a goner. Even after drying, the residual salt attracts moisture. Salt water makes an easy short circuit between contacts on a circuit board. I don't know if manufactured LED units use power supplies that are sealed like the power supplies for T5 and PC fluorescent light fixtures.

If this were mine, I would take it as far apart as possible and wipe off the saltwater 2 or 3 times with 2 or 3 separate damp cloths or paper towels to remove all the residual salt. Then I would set it out in direct sunlight for an afternoon to dry it before testing.
Testing would involve setting it on a nonflammable surface like concrete and plugging it in just far enough to make the connection, keeping my hand on the plug so I could quickly unplug it, if it started buzzing or hissing. That sound would indicate saltwater somewhere that I would then try to get to. If that didn't do it and it shorted out the power supply, I might consider replacing the power supply or junk it.

Mounting is critical. Please don't be offended if you already know this. I share it in the hopes that some reader may benefit.
If I can't find a wall stud to screw into I use Molly Bolts like described in this great article I just found where they tested wall anchors:
http://www.todayshomeowner.com/testing-wall-anchors-and-picture-hangers/
I can't recall ever having a Molly Bolt failure. I like them because they don't require as large a hole as Toggle Bolts so they are easy to paint or Spackle and paint over.

For really heavy loads or on drywall I don't trust to hold a Molly Bolt, I attach a nice 1x4 painted/stained board to the wall studs with grabber screws and then attach the item with shorter grabber screws.

Hope this helps someone.
Mahalo for reading,
Mark
Then put in rice I left mine in for like 2 days. pulled it out put it back together and it worked. but mine dropped in i was right there. so got it out fast.

Water no matter how much causes corrosion. Call a local cell phone repai place and ask them about a water damage cleaning. They professionaly ultrasonic clean it and put a anti rust coating on all the electrical connections. Think about it this way, no mater how long you do the rice thing there will still be moisture in it even the slightest. It will continue to rust and corode everything. DONT TURN IT ON.

Edited by chuckfu - May 16 2013 at 8:03pm
