I was curious for those of you running a sumpless/refugiumless tank with macroalgae in your display;what happens to your ph at night since you have no light shining onto the macro? I'm going to be getting some but wasnt sure how majorly it would affect things. Many people have seen my display, when I say it doesn't have a sump the main question I'm asked is "how is it filtered?". Well, a Gyre 150 at the top handles any flow I'd ever need, a tunze 9012 in tank (beasty skimmer by the way) pulls out tons of gunk, and at times a decent canister for chemical media. I keep a full mixed reef. SPS,LPS, and a big zoa garden. I haven't had any issues to date, everything is growing like weeds. I've even been lucky enough to have a seriatopora reproduce in my display, so far I've found 19 small colonies starting in various places. Anyway that's enough out of me, don't want to hijack the thread but I'll put pics up if you want or anyone is welcome to come check it out. Long story short, yes it's just as doable as a your more common system with a sump.

At the request of a hobbyist in another thread and to keep from hijacking that thread, this new topic is started:

If you have a sumpless tank, is it having trouble?
How was it set up, what is growing in it and what is wanted in it?
Is there a good growth of Macroalgae?
Below are some pics of a few of my sumpless reef aquariums from years back.

There is a 2 gal jug sitting on the table beside me with a male and female Betta and 3 Mollies. It has been set up for over 2 years, has had only 3 water changes and just one small gravel vacuuming. How is it possible that it has survived and thrived?  It could be a couple things together. The table is a few feet from an East facing window providing indirect sunlight to a large Amazon Sword plant has been growing in the jug the entire two years. The plant receives no trimming. The old leaves get eaten, decompose and recycle. Hair Algae is removed periodically and a self-sustaining population of snails helps keep the tank moderately clean in between glass scraping with a Two Little Fishies Nano-Mag.

The above 12/08 TOTM a year earlier at the time of day when it received brief exposure to direct sunlight. This was prior to the Tangs and Rabbitfish devouring a massive growth of Caulerpa.
