We have a 55 gal. tank that was given to us and never cleaned after it was drained.  Any suggestions on how to clean the tank without scratching the glass?  We would appreciate any help.  Thanks, Glen.

It depends on what you are cleaning off of the glass. If it is Coraline algae then I would soak the area in white vinegar then it should come off pretty easy.

Is it necessary to make sure all the coralline algae is cleaned off areas like the overflow? Or is it just for looks?

I don't think it would hurt anything to leave some, it will just fall off and or be covered with new coralline once it is set up.

Muriatic Acid... a gallon is $6 at lowes. Works AWESOME on cleaning  off just about anything, get the one that says is is 90% safer and the fumes arent too bad. I would use it about 70% strength, then after it's broken down all the hard water and coraline use a bunch of baking soda to neutralize it then rinse it ALOT!!

I have never tried it on a tank, but just did it on my dishwasher, shower, and toilets with no ill effects... I LOVE the stuff.

Use gloves, but even at full strength it didnt bother my hands much. Dont breathe the fumes if you can avoid it.

The best way I have found to clean a really dirty tank is with an electric corner sander with the cleaning pad (soft plastic almost like you would use to clean pans) dipped in vinegar.  works wonders and you dont have to use anything besides water to clean out the tank when you are done.

Ahh good. I have all the glass cleaned pretty easily, but that overflow is proving to be tough.

It is very difficult to get off of plastic. I don't know how you would get it off of a textured overflow.
