I am just wondering the lifespan of a glass fish tank. I have had my 70 gallon up for about a year but I bought the tank used, so I don't know exactly how old it is. So I am wondering how long do they normally last before its a good idea to get a new one? I had my 50 gallon used tank split the silicon and lose all of its water, but that was fresh water. I don't think I could prepare for a saltwater tank breach.

Also, how do you move a sand bed from one tank to another? If you are not careful will it totaly cause a huge amonia bloom?

Kevin,

I have two tanks in my house (60 gallon and a 120 gallon) that are over 15 years old.  I have never had a problem either one.

I would make sure the silicon is still soft and is not pealing from the edges, but for the most part they should last years.

As for the sand bed, I always move as much as possible, but some people don't think this is the best way to do it.
