someone told me that if you use much utah rock that your system is likely to crash in six months or so. Has anyone else experienced this?

I haven't used any in my tanks but it sounds like a bad rumor to me. There are quite a few tanks around that have been using this rock for much longer than that.

I know, someone on here said that 80% of their rock was utah rock. I dropped some in my tank tonight. I was just curious if anyone else had run into that.

I've run 100% in nanos for well over a year.
I don't see any reason why it would cause any problems

I have about 70% in my tank now for 5 months. I sure hope it dosn't crash in a month. My tank is doing very well with lots of coraline groth, it is hard to tell the utah rock from the live rock. I guess in a month we will see .

I think this rumor got started by a jealous piece of Tonga branch, with a severe case of rock envy.

50-100% Utah Rock for more than 5 years in several tanks. Absolutely no problems when cleaned properly. See my post "Secrets of an affordable reef aquarium".

Thanks, this gives me the confidence to through all of this stuff in my tank. Does anyone else spend more time looking at this board then looking at your reef?

My 29 gal is 100% Utah Rock from reefgoons sump, I've just passed the 6 month mark and we're going strong. I really think the LFS's are the ones who create the rumor that Utah Rock will make your tank crash, because they love the $6-$7 they charge per lbs...

I know one LFS told me utah rock WAS BAD! But my tank maybe has 30-40% in it and it's doing fine..except for my powder blue, but I am sure it has nothing to do with my rock!

Has anyone heard anything bad about Utah Rock from anyone other than one of the LFS's?

Lace rock is not the same as LBTR though it is sometimes also Tufa. Lake Bonneville Tufa Rock is the name given it by geologists.
The fact is, for both Utah Oolitic Sand and LBTR, except for one instance that I'll talk about in a minute, for every bad report I have followed up on, and there have been a few, the problem came about because of lack of proper cleaning. These things are terrestrial. They are full of dirt. Nutrient filled dirt. This stuff is free but it's not all that easy. Collecting and cleaning take time. The rock must be power washed and the sand must be rinsed thoroughly according to the directions posted in this thread where I have attempted to give all the info needed. http://www.utahreefs.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=9244
About 6 years ago, on our first collecting trip, we picked up two rocks which had a spot of turquoise color. In this instance the color was due to copper. The hobbyist, seti007, noticed something going bad and soon removed the two rocks from his aquarium. No problems were seen after that in his tank and he has used a lot of LBTR since then. That is the only incidence where the rock, properly washed caused a problem. We have since stripped that site clean of LBTR and moved on to other collecting sites.
