 Topic: Mantis Shrimp Needed

Hey everyone-
I need to take some pictures of a mantis shrimp. Who has one? And it can't be one that you say is somewhere in your 100 gal that you see once in a while. Sorry to be picky but I need one where I can come (tomorrow? or this weekend maybe?) and be able to show up and take pictures.

I know aquatica has one for sale (Peacock like in color, but I don't think it is a Peacock mantis). I also have one in my refugium that I could coax out to get pictures of it. Its lime green. I am way down in Pleasant Grove though. Let me know if you want to try and take pictures of it.

The drive to PG may be worth it. I realize these aren't commonly found. I'll also call Fish 4 U and see if they do have one. I may buy it just to take pics of it.

Just wanted to pat myself on the back for providing Adam his opportunity to take shots of a mantis. I caught one last weekend in my live rock. I dunked the rock into FW for 5 seconds or less and it came shooting out, just as advertised (I had done lots of research on how to catch these things). I snagged it with a net quickly and dumped it back into SW. Took a while to recover, but it is now living somewhat happily in my 3g Eclipse. It is not happy to be out of the rock and out of the big tank, but I would guess happy to be alive at least. Maybe Adam can post some of the shots if he gets a chance. I hope to catch another one this weekend. I have a smasher that has to go.. . . .

Its not that I don't know anything about mantis shrimp. I have researched them for quite a while and I have one currently in my refugium. I just wanted to see any pictures you might have of yours.

Oh!  Ok!
I am hoping Adam will send some to me or post them here. He just took them this afternoon so maybe in a week or so we will get some.
My mantis is doing better now, after the total invasion of privacy this afternoon. I had kept its tank completely devoid of any deco except two large empty snail shells. Now that the photos are done, I partially burried the shells so there's only a small opening hole for it to peek out of and added some other deco. It spent the first two hours or so scurrying about, not knowing what to do. Then it got up the nerve to charge into one of the empty shells, probably hoping it was empty. The tank is next to my monitor on my desk, so every once in a while I see it peeking out, in attack mode. I've never seen it do that before so either its royally p.o.'d at me now (I don't blame it, I would be too), or it is more comfortable now in its new somewhat-hidden emty shell home. Cool to see it come out though with its claws in full display, ready to strike.

an attempt to see flourescence, but no flourescence seen . . .

Can you see this -->  at the top of the "post Reply" window? Click on it and follow the directions. The pics need to be about 700 or less pixels per inch and less than 125k file size. Do you know how to shrink pics?

Man, that guy is tiny. Mine is probably 3-4 inches. Problem is getting it out of the hole. I will see if I can get a worth while picture (now that we had the photography meeting) and post it.

Its grown a bit since because I keep feeding it ghost shrimp. Luckily its not picky and will even eat the dead ones (only at night, of course). So its about an inch long in that photo and now its maybe 25% bigger. Very cute though - every morning when I turn the lights on it pokes its head out to say hi, then goes back into its shell to sleep.

S'ok. Mantis is fine. He is currently residing in a 3g tank on my desk at work and I just need to downsize. Its taking up too much room. I still like my mantis, but its just too much stuff in my office and believe me, I already have enough tanks at home - the wife wouldn't want another. So, it is very healthy and growing well - likes ghost shrimp, so it is easy to feed too.
